Liverpool left it late to offload one of their standout youngsters.
Jayden Danns will spend the rest of the season on loan at Sunderland
Jayden Danns' loan move to Sunderland has been confirmed by Liverpool despite the youngster enduring a problem during his medical.
Tests performed on the 19-year-old reportedly flagged up an issue with his back. He is therefore returning to the AXA Training Centre to complete a period of rehabilitation before eventually heading up to Wearside for what should be his first taste of regular senior football.
Liverpool also confirmed that Danns signed a new long-term contract before completing the deal, with the youngster making a big impression in the limited minutes he has been given by manager Arne Slot.
Danns, who plays up front, has scored three goals in nine appearances since making his senior debut last February. The youngster, who is the son of former Premier League footballer Neil Danns, will join the Black Cats' second-tier promotion push under Regis Le Bris.
Sunderland are currently fourth in the table behind Burnley, Sheffield United and Leeds. But with only five points separating the top four, a barnstorming race for the two automatic promotions spots is in store for the final 16 matches of the campaign.
Le Bris has primarily played Wilson Isidor as a centre-forward this season but the arrival of Danns will give him another option, as well as greater depth, given that no player other than Isidor has managed more than four Championship goals.
Liverpool did not make any permanent signings during the winter transfer window. Stefan Bajcetic and Calvin Ramsay were recalled from loan spells before being sent out to Las Palmas and Kilmarnock until the end of the season.
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Marcelo Pitaluga was recalled from a loan stint at Livingstone and sold to Fluminense on a free transfer.
The Reds have a promising crop of youngsters coming through and Anfield bosses refuse to sell them on the cheap.
Ben Doak - on loan at Middlesbrough - was the subject of unsuccessful bids from Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town last month, while Boro pursued Tyler Morton on deadline day but could not meet his price tag.
Slot's side are six points clear with a game in hand in the title race. And he is happy to wait until the summer for Liverpool to spring into life in the transfer market.
"I know people sometimes question this because they haven't seen us doing a lot in the transfer market in the summer and now in the winter as well," he told the BBC.
"There's a reason for that - because we're happy with the squad. But I do know we're definitely working on strengthening in the summer."
Barcelona's ongoing efforts to prise Luis Diaz away from Liverpool have hit a significant snag.Diaz is ranked at no.6 in FourFourTwo's list of the best left wingers in the world right now and has just enjoyed his best-ever season for the Reds, prompting Barca to set their sights on taking the Colombian to the soon-to-reopen Camp Nou.But they may have to turn their attentions to an alternative targ...
