El traspaso de Fernando Torres desde el Liverpool al Chelsea sacudió la Premier League hace varios años atrás. En invierno de 2011, el delantero se convertía en el español más caro de la historia al pasar de los reds a los blues a cambio de 58,5 millones de euros. En el Liverpool, El Niño llegó a ser Balón de Bronce y uno de los mejores delanteros del mundo pero, en el Chelsea, le costó más llegar a su mejor nivel, hasta incluso llegar a salir cedido al Milán, que más tarde le cedería al Atlético de Madrid.
Cuando se produjo el traspaso, Jamie Carragher, entonces capitán del Liverpool, reconoce ahora en una charla con Terry en Sky Sports que el vestuario de los 'reds' se quedó en "shock". Primero, por la marcha del delantero español y también por el precio que el Chelsea había pagado por él.
"No podía creerlo. Quiero decir, sabía que habíamos engañado al Chelsea. Yo había jugado con Torres durante todo el año y ya era una sombra de sí mismo. Eso sí, pienso que durante 18 meses en Liverpool consiguió ser el mejor delantero del mundo. Creo que Torres tenía buenos números jugando contra el Chelsea y el dueño se acordaba. Esa temporada les hizo dos goles y ganamos 2-0 y supongo que la decisión de ficharle la tomó, probablemente, Roman Abramovich. 50 millones de libras era mucho dinero en esa época y nos quedamos en shock. Que se fuera Torres nos dejó destrozados pero, no nos podíamos creer que nos dieran 50 millones por él", asegura el capitán de los 'reds'.
Mientras en Anfield reinvirtieron el dinero en Andy Carroll (41 millones de euros al Newcastle) y en Luis Suárez (26 millones de euros al Ajax), en el Chelsea estaban emocionados con la llegada del delantero de Fuenlabrada, tal y como cuenta John Terry. "Es interesante. En el Chelsea odiábamos jugar contra él. Siempre nos marcaba en Anfield y en Stamford Bridge. Cuando Yossi Benayoun, que se llevaba bien con él, nos dijo que venía pensamos que íbamos a dominar la Premier los próximos cinco o seis años. Es lo que creíamos después de verle y jugar contra él", explicaba el ex del Chelsea desde la perspectiva que tenían en Londres en el momento de su llegada.
Como 'blue', Torres ganó títulos pero no alcanzó el gran nivel realizador que consiguió en Liverpool (45 en 172 partidos en Londres por los 81 en 142 en Anfield). Con el Chelsea fue campeón de la Champions, de la Europa League y de la FA Cup. Aún así entre esos 45 dejó goles importantes, como el que certificó el pase a la final de la Champions League de Múnich, eliminando al Barcelona en el Camp Nou en el último minuto.
