después de conversar telefónicamente con el presidente del COI, Thomas Bach.

desvelada. El comité organizador de Tokio 2020 confirmó este lunes que los
próximos Juegos Olímpicos se celebrarán del 23 de julio al 8 de agosto de 2021,
casi un año después de la fecha prevista inicialmente. Así lo anunció en una
rueda de prensa el presidente del comité organizador, Yoshiro Mori, poco
después de conversar telefónicamente con el presidente del Comité Olímpico
Internacional (COI), Thomas Bach.
La nueva fecha
fue propuesta por los organizadores teniendo en cuenta que se quería conceder
“suficiente tiempo para la preparación de los atletas” y las otras partes
implicadas, así como que se consideraba preferible que los Juegos tuvieran
lugar en un período vacacional, según Mori,
“Debido
a la situación del coronavirus, también creíamos que era mejor que los Juegos
fueran en verano”, añadió el presidente del comité organizador sobre la
necesidad de dar tiempo a que se normalice la situación.
Los próximos
Juegos Olímpicos iban a empezar el 24 de julio de este año, pero el 24 de marzo
pasado se anunció que quedaban aplazados a causa del coronavirus, que había
obligado a cancelar gran parte de los Preolímpicos y torneos clasificatorios, a
suspender los entrenamientos de los atletas y a restringir los desplazamientos
internacionales.
De acuerdo con lo
anunciado por Mori, la cita olímpica tendrá lugar ahora el 23 de julio de 2021
y terminarán el 8 de agosto siguiente. Los Juegos Paralímpicos, por su parte,
comenzarán el 24 de agosto y se cerrarán el 5 de septiembre. Son las mismas
fechas que estaban previstas para 2020, con el adelanto de un día para que la
inauguración coincida con un viernes.
“La
semana pasada, el COI y el comité organizador pospusieron los Juegos Olímpicos
hasta el 2021 debido a la pandemia de coronavirus. Se habló de programarlo para
la primavera, un cambio que coincidiría con el florecimiento de los famosos
cerezos en flor de Japón. Pero también chocaría con las ligas deportivas
europeas y norteamericanas”, explicó Mori, quien añadió que su celebración
posterior daría más tiempo para completar las numerosas pruebas clasificatorias
que han sido pospuestas por la pandemia.
Recordar que este
es el primer aplazamiento en la historia de las Olimpiadas, aunque hubo varias
cancelaciones en tiempos de guerra. Las nuevas fechas olímpicas entrarán en
conflicto con los campeonatos mundiales de atletismo y natación programados,
pero ahora se espera que esos eventos también sean aplazados. “El COI ha
mantenido conversaciones estrechas con las federaciones internacionales
pertinentes”, dijo Mori. “Creo que las FI’s han aceptado que los Juegos se
celebren en verano”, añadió.
Tanto Mori como
el director ejecutivo Toshiro Muto destacaron que el coste de la reprogramación
de los Juegos será “masivo” –los informes locales estiman miles de millones de
dólares– con la mayoría de los gastos a cargo de los contribuyentes japoneses.
Muto prometió transparencia en el cálculo de los costes, y los tiempos de
prueba para decidir cómo se reparten. “Dado que (las Olimpiadas) estaban
programadas para este verano, todas las sedes han renunciado a acoger cualquier
otro evento durante este tiempo, así que ¿cómo abordamos eso?” se preguntó
Muto. “Además, tendrá que haber garantías cuando reservemos las nuevas fechas,
y existe la posibilidad de que esto conlleve el pago del alquiler. Así que
habrá costes incurridos y tendremos que considerarlos uno por uno”.
Katsuhiro
Miyamoto, profesor emérito de economía del deporte en la Universidad de Kansai,
calcula que los costes ascenderán a 4.000 millones de dólares. Eso cubriría el
precio del mantenimiento de los estadios, el reacondicionamiento, el pago de
alquileres, penalizaciones y otros gastos.
