Acoplar el calendario europeo una vez concluya la crisis del coronavirus no será tarea sencilla. Está por ver cuántas jornadas de Liga y cuántas eliminatorias de Champions y Europa League quedan trastocadas. También, cómo afecta todo ello a la Eurocopa y, en caso de aplazamiento, cuándo podría ubicarse en un calendario tremendamente cargado. Lo mismo ocurre con la Copa América, prevista para las mismas fechas exactas que la Euro.
Una solución de emergencia que podría utilizar la UEFA para la Champions y la Europa League es la disputa de eliminatorias a partido único. Una vez se cerrasen los octavos de final, que está por ver cuándo sería posible, se abriría la opción de jugar los cuartos, las semifinales y la final a partido único. De este modo, se necesitarían tres fechas únicamente para cerrar el torneo, más los encuentros de octavos pendientes. Se podría llegar incluso al día previsto de la final de la Champions el 30 de mayo en Estambul. Eso sí, acarrearía el debate de que jugar a partido único sería, en principio, una gran ventaja para el equipo local resultante del sorteo. Lo mismo ocurriría con la Europa League, que seguiría un camino paralelo.
De mantener la idea de eliminatorias a ida y vuelta en cuartos y semifinales, la competición probablemente pisaría junio y con ello las fechas programadas para la Eurocopa. El torneo de selecciones de la UEFA, que este año con motivo de su aniversario va a celebrarse en 12 países, puede ser el gran perjudicado del calendario anual. Si la Champions, la Europa League y las Ligas y Copas locales empujan a la Eurocopa hacia el verano, una opción que surge inmediatamente es aplazar un año el torneo y disputarlo en 2021. Lo mismo ocurriría con la Copa América, pues casi todas sus estrellas militan en Europa.
Pero hay problemas importantes para el aplazamiento de un año. El principal es la creación del nuevo Mundial de Clubes de la FIFA, anunciado hace unos meses a bombo y platillo, y cuya disputa está programada para junio y julio de 2021. Será el primer Mundial con 24 equipos, se celebrará en China y es de suponer que participarán en él los grandes conjuntos del mundo y por ende de Europa (Madrid, Barça, Juventus, PSG, Bayern, los de la Premier)... Aquí surge un conflicto entre UEFA y FIFA que ya es viejo. Los dos pelean por copar la máxima atención del público y competirían por unas fechas que la FIFA ya hizo suyas y que debería "ceder" a la UEFA para que organice su Eurocopa. Las estrellas europeas no podrán disputar ambos torneos en ningún caso. O uno u otro.
Otro asunto que perturba a la UEFA es que en 2021 está prevista la Eurocopa femenina, a disputarse en julio. El máximo organismo bajo ningún concepto querría oscurecer con el campeonato masculino su cada vez más importante versión femenina, toda una apuesta que va en consonancia con el crecimiento de la mujer en el fútbol y en la sociedad. No tendría tantos problemas con la fase final de la Liga de Naciones, que también está programada para junio de 2021 pero que al tener menos interés podría desplazarse sin tanto problema. Un galimatías del que habrá más pistas el próximo martes, después de la reunión de la UEFA para desbloquear este asunto.
