El Leicester de
Brendan Rodgers, tercer clasificado de la Premier League, accedió a los cuartos
de final de la FA Cup tras derrotar al Birmingham, de Segunda División, gracias
a un solitario gol de Ricardo Pereira en el minuto 82 que decidió un igualado
derbi de Midlands en el King Power Stadium.
El lateral
portugués remató de cabeza a la red un centro de Marc Albrighton y acabó con el
sueño del Birmingham, entrenado por el Pep Clotet, técnico barcelonés que
inició su carrera en los banquillos en la cantera del Espanyol, Cornellà y
Figueres. Era la primera vez en ocho temporadas que el equipo de Birmingham
llegaba a octavos de la legendaria FA Cup pero no pudieron forzar la prórroga.

Mientras, el
Leicester, sin su goleador Jamie Vardy por molestias musculares pero con el
regreso a la titularidad de Wilfred Ndidi tras sufrir hace un mes una lesión de
rodilla, pone fin a una racha de cinco partidos sin ganar (de los cuales cuatro
sin marcar) y accede por segunda vez en tres años a los cuartos de final de una
competición. Ahora aspira a como mínimo igualar los cuatro subcampeonatos que
tiene en su haber, el último de ellos en 1969.
Aunque no
pudieron decidir la eliminatoria hasta el final, el triunfo de los ‘foxes’ es
justo ya que su porcentaje de posesión de balón alcanzó el 76,6 por ciento. Eso
sí, al margen del gol, su mejor ocasión fue un trallazo lejano de James
Maddison al larguero, el segundo disparo entre los tres palos en todo el
encuentro. En cambio, el Birmingham apenas dispuso de ocasiones.
