Tony Adams ha revelado detalles durísimos de su vida privada en una entrevista concedida a The Guardian, donde asegura que después de beber "no quería vivir más", pero no sabía cómo suicidarse.
Adams, que hace 20 años creó Sporting Chance, una organización benéfica para curar adicciones en deportistas y dedicada a la salud mental, aseguró:“Me siento increíble ahora que me he dado cuenta de lo que supone todo esto. Defender a tu país, capitanear al Arsenal, el debut... Todo son cosas increíbles, pero salvar la vida de la gente es otra cosa”.
“Cuando toqué fondo, el fútbol estaba fuera del radar. El deporte que amo hasta la muerte y que me ha dado absolutamente todo en mi vida y por lo que estoy aquí sentado con ustedes hoy, es el fútbol. Y no me importaba una mierda. Estaba fuera. Esta fundación es lo mejor que he hecho”, reveló el ex entrenador del Granada (2017).
Y agregó: “Necesité mucho dolor para admitirlo todo. El alcohol me escondió: prisión, cuidados intensivos, mearme, cagarme. ¿Sabes lo que quiero decir? Dormir con gente con la que no quería acostarme.... Tengo que recordarme a mí mismo que cuando acababa de beber no quería vivir, pero no sabía cómo suicidarme. Solo entonces pude pedir ayuda”.
