El conjunto dirigido por Pedro Troglio buscó asumir el rol protagónico del encuentro. Se plantó en campo rival desde el inicio ante un Olimpo que intentó generar peligro a partir de la frescura de un equipo que no superó el promedio de edad de 22 años. Sin embargo, fue superior en todo momento el conjunto platense. Lo capitalizó en el marcador a los 40 minutos Matías Gómez, quien aprovechó un contra golpe, ganó en velocidad ante Martín Ferreyra y definió pese a la rápida salida de Robertino Lanziani. El juvenil había tenido su chance en el comienzo, aunque el arquero se había lucido con una gran tapada. La revancha llegó sobre la finalización de la etapa inicial para establecer el 1-0 parcial en el estadio Coloso del Ruca Quimey.
Olimpo vendió cara su derrota y buscó el empate incesantemente durante todo el segundo tiempo. Gimnasia se replegó y dejó avanzar a un equipo que apostó a los centros al área con delanteros de alta estatura. El conjunto dirigido por Pedro Troglio bajó su nivel y sufrió por no ser capaz de sostener la pelota a partir de sus hombres de experiencia. Contó con alguna ocasión aislada para aumentar la ventaja del marcador y terminar de decretar la clasificación. Sin embargo, falló en la resolución y debió padecer hasta los minutos finales.
Con la clasificación a Octavos consumada, Gimnasia cumplió el primer objetivo tras la vuelta de Pedro Troglio. El club se había propuesto avanzar de ronda en la Copa Total Argentina y lo consiguió. No le sobró mucho en cuanto al juego y sufrió más de lo necesario porque aún debe aceitar varios aspectos de su funcionamiento. Sin embargo, ya está en una nueva ronda y aguardará por San Martín de Tucumán, Boca o Alvarado de Mar del Plata.
