Con goles de Felipe Mora y Pablo Barrera, los Pumas UNAM empezaron la fecha inicial del Apertura 2018 de la Liga MX con el pie derecho tras vencer por 2-0 al cuadro de los Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz.

En Veracruz los Pumas del entrenador David Patiño comenzaron con dominio de la pelota, pero los “escualos” del estratega Guillermo Vázquez emparejaron las acciones y en el 14 llegaron al área con un venenoso disparo de zurda de Carlos Esquivel.
Pumas respondió con un golpe de zurda del argentino Víctor Malcorra, detenido por el portero Melitón Hernández en el 23, y un derechazo del paraguayo Carlos González estrellado en el travesaño en el 30.
Los visitantes tomaron ventaja en el 37 en un tiro de esquina en el que Felipe Mora se sacudió la marca y remató de cabeza para poner el marcador 0-1.
Veracruz buscó el empate, en el 44 estuvo cerca de conseguirlo en un tiro de esquina pero fueron los Pumas los que ampliaron la ventaja. El argentino Guido Milán cometió una falta en el área y Barrera convirtió el penalti.
Para la segunda parte el Veracruz salió en busca de goles, mas le faltó buen tino.
En el minuto 58, el chileno Martín Rodríguez le puso un balón a su compatriota Felipe Mora, quien echó el balón por fuera, a partir de lo cual los universitarios le dieron la pelota al cuadro de casa, confiado en aprovechar los espacios y anotar un tercer gol, lo cual no sucedió.
El argentino Rodrigo Noya convirtió un saque de manos en un pase de gol en el minuto 70, pero ningún delantero de Veracruz llegó para rematar y en el 81 Diego Chávez se escapó y le tocó el balón al argentino Cristian Menéndez, quien disparó por un lado.
Hoy, en el segundo partido de la jornada el Atlas recibirá al Querétaro y mañana continuarán las acciones de fin de semana con los duelos Cruz Azul-Puebla, Pachuca-Monterrey, Tigres UANL-León y Tijuana-Guadalajara.
