La Selección española ya está clasificada para la Eurocopa 2020 y como primera de grupo, pero aún le queda un tercer objetivo de cara al último partido de esta fase de clasificación contra Rumanía (lunes 18, 20:45). España depende de sí misma para ser cabeza de serie en el sorteo de la fase final que se celebrará el sábado 30 de noviembre (18:00, hora española) en Bucarest (Rumanía). Con una victoria en el Wanda Metropolitano, La Roja estará en el bombo de las mejores selecciones.
A diferencia de otras ediciones de la Eurocopa o del Mundial, donde los bombos se venían configurado en función del ranking UEFA o FIFA sin tener en cuenta los resultados en la fase de clasificación en cuestión, para la Eurocopa 2020 los resultados en esta fase de clasificación sí serán los que determinen la distribución de las 24 selecciones en los cuatro bombos del sorteo.
La condición de cabeza serie la tendrán las 6 selecciones que, habiendo finalizado en primera posición de sus respectivos grupos de clasificación, lo hayan conseguido con menores resultados. Pero al haber grupos de cinco y seis selecciones, en los grupos de seis (como es el caso de España) no se tienen en cuenta los resultados contra el último clasificado. En el bombo 2 estarán las otras cuatro primeras y las dos mejores segundas; en el 3, las seis siguientes segundas; y en el 4, las dos peores segundas y, en genérico, las ganadoras de los cuatro minitorneos de repesca que, en función de los resultados de la Liga de las Naciones, se jugarán en marzo de 2020.
Con las clasificaciones actuales, España estaría provisionalmente en el bombo de cabezas de serie junto a Italia (ya confirmada), Ucrania, Inglaterra, Bélgica y Francia, pero necesita ganar a Rumanía para certificar matemáticamente tal condición.
En todo caso, dadas las peculiaridades de esta Eurocopa multisede, la UEFA puede hacer pequeñas modificaciones a la composición del sorteo si coinciden en un mismo bombo dos selecciones anfitrionas que comparten grupo en la fase final.
Aunque aún no estén definidas las cabezas de serie, sí hay algunas selecciones entre las clasificadas que ya saben que no podrán alcanzar el bombo de las elegidas: República Checa, Portugal, Croacia y Finlandia. Serán posibles rivales de La Roja si España consigue su siguiente objetivo en esta fase de clasificación. Dado que las selecciones anfitrionas que se clasifiquen ya tienen asignado grupo, España no podrá enfrentarse en cualquier caso a Italia (la Azzurra es la única selección cabeza de serie de momento), Rusia, Inglaterra y, si se clasifican, Holanda o Alemania, entre otras.
