El ex portero del Chelsea firmó con un equipo semi-profesional de Inglaterra.
El ex portero del Chelsea y del Arsenal, Petr Cech, decidió abandonar su retiro, pero no regresará al fútbol. En cambio, firmó con el club semiprofesional de hockey sobre hielo Guildford Phoenix, para quien debutará el viernes.
"Estoy encantado de tener la oportunidad de jugar con el Phoenix para obtener experiencia en el partido", dijo Cech en un comunicado de prensa del club. "Espero poder ayudar a este equipo joven a lograr sus objetivos para la temporada y tratar de ganar tantos juegos como sea posible cuando tenga la oportunidad de jugar. Después de 20 años de fútbol profesional, será una experiencia maravillosa para mí jugar el juego que me encantaba ver y jugar de niño".
El jugador de 37 años participó en una sesión de entrenamiento con el Phoenix en agosto, publicando una foto en Instagram de él jugando como portero.
Cech se retiró del fútbol después de la temporada pasada, después de haber jugado 11 años con el Chelsea y cuatro con el Arsenal.
En junio, Cech regresó al Chelsea en un papel de asesor técnico y de rendimiento, una posición en la que ofrece consejos sobre fútbol y asuntos de rendimiento, al tiempo que busca construir vínculos fuertes entre el primer equipo del Chelsea y la academia juvenil.
Pero ahora tiene un nuevo papel con el Phoenix, cuyo entrenador cree que el veterano portero ha estado dando grandes pasos en el hielo.
"Estamos muy emocionados de que Petr se una al equipo de Phoenix y estamos ansiosos por verlo en acción este fin de semana", dijo el entrenador del club, Milos Melicherik. "Ha mejorado mucho desde que lo vi por primera vez en el hielo y estoy emocionado de verlo jugar".
Cech nació en Pilsen, Checoslovaquia, en lo que hoy es la República Checa. La ex estrella del Chelsea ha hablado sobre su amor por el hockey sobre hielo que creció en el pasado. "Siempre quise jugar hockey sobre hielo, esa fue siempre mi primera opción", dijo Cech al Arsenal TVHD hace tres años.
"Pero obviamente, en ese momento, tendrías que comprar todo el equipo para jugar, así que si imaginas el aspecto financiero de comprar todo el equipo y creces rápido siendo un niño, entonces debes seguir comprándolo y simplemente no podríamos pagarlo".
