Para el Oporto, estar en la Europa League es una sensación poco común. Los 'dragones' son un clásico de la Champions, pero la debacle ante el Krasnodar, en la tercera ronda previa de la principal competición de clubes del continente, les llevó a competir en el segundo torneo europeo. Y eso es todo un aviso para la competencia: en las últimas dos veces que inició la temporada jugando en la Europa League/Copa de la UEFA -la 2002-03 con Mourinho y la 2010-11 con Villas-Boas-, el Oporto la ganó. Y el equipo de Conceiçao empezó su andadura en el torneo de la mejor manera, derrotando (2-1) el Young Boys.
'Tiquinho' Soares, con un doblete, fue el gran nombre propio de la noche. El brasileño aún no había marcado esta temporada y, en los últimos 15 encuentros que había realizado con la camiseta del Oporto, sólo había anotado tres dianas. En el duelo ante el Young Boys, Soares tardó 29 minutos para hacer dos dianas. Se volvió a encontrar con el gol.
Tras un inicio de curso complicado, en el que perdió en Liga ante el Gil Vicente y fue eliminado de la Champions, el Oporto está en un dulce momento, llevando cinco triunfos consecutivos. Con Marcano titular en el eje de la zaga al lado de Pepe, los 'dragones' tardaron ocho minutos para adelantarse. Soares, tras asistencias del colombiano Luis Diaz, hizo el 1-0.
En el equipo visitante, el camerunés Jean Pierre Nsame fue siempre el jugador más peligroso. EN el 15', tras superar a Pepe, se plantó sólo ante Marchesín y forzó la falta del meta argentino. Penalti que el propio Nsame convirtió en el 1-1.
Sin embargo, Soares estaba en su noche. En el 29', tras asistencia de Corona, 'Tiquinho' hizo el 2-1 definitivo. El mexicano Corona, que volvió a ser lateral derecho, ya hizo cuatro asistencias este curso, más que ningún jugador en el Oporto.
