El centrocampista del Everton, André Gomes, es uno de los pocos jugadores que han sido compañeros de equipo de Leo Messi, en el Barça, y de Cristiano Ronaldo, en la selección de Portugal. En una charla con Danny Murphy, ex jugador del Liverpool, en el Daily Mail, el interior explicó sobre los dos cracks mundiales que “siempre estuvieron un paso por encima del resto de los jugadores. Conocí a Cristiano Ronaldo por primera vez cuando tenía 19 años después de mi primera llamada con Portugal. Con Leo, era un poco mayor, 23 años, cuando firmé con el Barcelona. Su calidad está por encima de la línea. A veces no puedo entender por qué las personas pelean tanto por quién es el mejor de los dos. Diferentes estilos pero con el mismo objetivo. Les gusta ser protagonistas en el juego y alcanzan los objetivos que establecieron para ayudar al equipo. Fuera del campo, puedes hablar con ambos fácilmente. A la gente le gusta pensar que uno de ellos es tímido o que uno es arrogante pero no, ambos son personas normales”.
El portugués explicó que “la afición fue el 80 por ciento de la razón por la que firmé con el Everton desde el Barcelona este verano después de un año prestado. Me hicieron sentir querido. Fue una muy buena conexión. Tal vez sentí que necesitaba eso. No lo veo como un paso atrás. Venir a Everton significaba estar en un ambiente donde me siento cómodo conmigo mismo. Yo diría que la temporada pasada fue un gran paso adelante para mí personalmente y ahora soy un jugador del Everton a tiempo completo”.
Afirmó, respecto al Everton, que “la ambición es volver a Europa. Como saben, vivir con todas las expectativas es difícil ya que los fans aman al club y quieren ver que sucedan grandes cosas, especialmente con el dinero invertido. Como club y afición merecemos ir a Europa. Nuestro equipo quiere la combinación correcta. Necesitamos esa parte de la lucha por la forma en que nuestros aficionados viven el juego. Pero también queremos el otro lado, jugando de manera inteligente”.
