Desde que desafiaron a la lógica conquistando la Premier League más sorprendente de la historia en la 2015-16, el Leicester ha vivido un fuerte proceso de renovación de su plantilla. Simpson, Huth, Mahrez, Kanté, Drinkwater, Simpson, Okazaki, Ulloa... y el grueso de los héroes de los 'foxes' de Claudio Ranieri' dejaron el King Power Stadium en los últimos tres años. Sólo Vardy, Albrighton, Morgan y Schmeichel sobreviven del once de un equipo que se ha ido reinventando curso a curso y que en este inicio de Liga está luchando de nuevo con los grandes de Inglaterra.
"Todavía hay un largo camino por recorrer. Ha sido un muy buen comienzo", confesó Brendan Rodgers tras la victoria (3-1) sobre el Bournemouth que colocó al Leicester tercero con ocho puntos en cuatro jornadas. Sólo Liverpool (12) y Manchester City (10) superan a unos 'foxes' que están invictos como 'reds' y 'citizens'. El técnico norirlandés, desde su desembarco en marzo procedente del Celtic para sustituir a Claude Puel, ha dado una vuelta de tuerca a unos 'foxes' que remontaron y rozaron los puestos europeos en la pasada Premier con él y que ahora quieren asaltar la zona alta con su joven plantilla. Volver a Europa es su gran meta.
Desde que conquistaron la Liga, en cuatro campañas, el Leicester ha gastado ¡400 millones de euros! en fichajes y ha ingresado 300 bajando la edad media de su once de 27,4 años a 25,4. Algunas altas como Slimani o Adrien Silva no han cuajado y otras como Ndidi, Maddison... han sido claves. La venta de Maguire por 87 'kilos' al Manchester United ha sido la última de un club que este verano ha hecho los dos fichajes más caros de su historia. Tielemans (45 millones al Mónaco) y el español Ayoze Pérez (33,4 al Newcastle) han sido los refuerzos junto a Praet (Sampadoria, 21), Justin (6,7 Luton)... de un Leicester que ha elevado el gasto en fichajes en la 2019-20 a 106,1 millones, el séptimo mayor de la Premier. Incorporaciones que dan forma a un bloque joven que apuesta por promesas y por su cantera.
"Van a tener una oportunidad", apuntó un Rodgers que ha dado un papel preponderante al extremo Barnes (21 años), al medio Choudhury (21) y Chilwell (22), consolidado ya en el lateral izquierdo de la selección inglesa, desde su llegada a Leicester. Productos de su factoría que se han unido a otros talentos que ya estaba en el club como el central turco Söyüncü (23), el portugués Ricardo Pereira (25), el pivote nigeriano Ndidi (22), el extremo inglés Gray (23)... o a un James Maddison que a sus 22 años es una de las grandes sensaciones de la Premier.
"Es un futbolista flexible, multitalento, que se adapta a la estructura del equipo. Tiene calidad e inteligencia y su manejo del balón y del pase es excepcional", confesó Rodgers. Maddison se doctoró el curso pasado tras su fichaje por 25 'kilos' del Norwich en la Premier siendo el jugador que más ocasiones creó (100) de la Liga inglesa. El 10 anotó siete goles y dio otras tantas asistencias y esta temporada ha arrancado de forma sensacional. Actuaciones que le han valido para ser convocado por primera vez con Inglaterra y ser la pieza maestra de un Leicester que sigue apoyándose en algunos de sus clásicos.
"Vardy es un delantero de clase mundial. Desde el día que llegué ha sido formidable", señaló Rodgers. Schmeichel bajo palos, Fuchs y Morgan como refresco de los zagueros, Albrighton en un costado y el punta inglés en ataque son los únicos campeones con protagonismo actualmente. Pero nadie tiene tanta influencia como Jamie. Con Rodgers, Vardy ha anotado 12 goles y dado dos asistencias en 14 partidos de Premier. Con su doblete al Bournemouth alcanzó las tres dianas en esta Liga. A sus 32 años, es el líder de la joven armada de los 'foxes'. Un nexo con la historia para un renovado Leicester que aspira a volver a Europa y a sorprender de nuevo. En la 2015-16, cuando ganaron la Premier, también arrancaron con 10 puntos de 15 posibles. Toda una señal.
