River se está abonando a estar entre los cuatro mejores de la Copa Libertadores en este último lustro. De las últimas cinco actuaciones en el trofeo continental, el equipo Millonario se hizo presente en las semifinales en todas ellas, a excepción de la edición de 2016, en la que cayó en los octavos de final ante Independiente del Valle (Ecuador).
De las tres veces en que llegó a esta instancia, el equipo de Marcelo Gallardo se alzó con la Copa Libertadores en 2015, en la que le ganó la final a Tigres (México), y en la pasada edición, en la famosa final ganada a Boca en Madrid el partido de vuelta, rival con el que se volverán a ver las caras en estas semifinales por un lugar a la ansiada final que se jugará en el estadio Nacional de Santiago de Chile.
Este eliminación a Cerro Porteño en los cuartos de final (2-0 en la ida y 1-1 en la vuelta) corona otra buena demostración de que los partidos eliminatorios se le dan bien a Marcelo Gallardo, que tiene un porcentaje superior en victorias que en derrotas. En esta edición, River finalizó segundo en su grupo, detrás de Internacional, ya eliminado, y dejó fuera a Cruzeiro por penales en octavos de final.
Edición 2015
Se clasificó segundo en el Grupo 6 gracias al triunfo de los mexicanos de Tigres ante Juan Aurich como visitantes por 5-4 en la última fecha. En octavos se enfrentó a Boca (el mejor de los primeros) en la famosa serie en la que se suspendió el partido de vuelta en La Bombonera al comenzar el segundo tiempo por la agresión de los hinchas locales a los jugadores visitantes. La ida la había ganado River por 1-0. En cuartos eliminó a Cruzeiro tras ganarle en Brasil por 3-0 después de perder en Buenos Aires 1-0. En las semifinal eliminó a Guaraní. 2-0 en el Monumental y 1-1 en Asunción. En la final ante Tigres fue 0-0 en México y 3-0 en casa.
Edición 2016
Fue eliminado por Independiente del Valle en octavos tras perder 2-0 en Ecuador y al no alcanzarle el 1-0 logrado como local.
Edición 2017
Terminó primero en el Grupo 3 y volvio a tocarle Guaraní, como en 2015. Curiosamente se repitieron el 2-0 en casa y el 1-1 en Paraguay. En cuartos cayó en la ida ante Jorge Wilstermann por 3-0 y ganó como local 8-0 con los cinco goles de Scocco. En las semis enfrentó a Lanús. Ganó el primer partido 1-0 y perdió la vuelta por 4-2, la noche que ganaba por 2-0.
Edición 2018
Fue primer en el Grupo D con 12 puntos. En octavos eliminó a Racing. Fue 0-0 en Avellaneda y 3-0 en el Monumental. En cuartos otro 0-0 en Avellaneda, esta vez ante Independiente, y 3-1 como local. En las semifinales perdió el primer partido como local ante Gremio (1-0) y se clasificó por el gol de visitante tras ganar en Porto Alegre por 2-1.
