No era de extrañar que el Ajax que se vio ayer en Nicosia no se pareciese al que deslumbró a toda Europa la temporada pasada. No por falta de ganas, sino por falta de talento. De Jong y De Ligt eran los cimientos en los que se basaba el juego del campeón holandés, y sin ellos, como no podía ser de otra forma, el proyecto tiende a desmoronarse.
En un inicio, parecía que el guión del partido ante el APOEL iba a ser el esperado. Desde el minuto 1 el Ajax tomó la iniciativa mientras que el club chipriota se encerró en su área con la esperanza de resistir y cazar alguna ocasión a la contra o a balón parado. Con semejante argumento, parecía que la película que se iba a ver en el césped del Neo GSP Stadium apenas tendría alguna escena de misterio: en 13 minutos, el conjunto de Ten Hag ya había tenido cuatro ocasiones clarísimas de gol. Sin embargo, sí hubo sorpresas. El Ajax empezó a sentirse excesivamente cómodo y ese fue precisamente el peor de los errores, acomodarse. De la mano de Al Tamari, el Apoel se estiró y llegó varias veces al área de Onana. El jordano rozó en tres ocasiones el gol y provocó dos amarillas en apenas 20 minutos.
Los ajacied no volvieron a sentirse seguros con el balón hasta los primeros minutos de la segunda parte, pero por suerte para el APOEL, el segundo tiempo fue un calco del primero. Tras un buen inicio del Ajax, los chipriotas respondieron con tres ocasiones clarísimas: Pavlovic estrelló el balón al larguero, Al Tamari chutó el lateral de la red y Onana tuvo que tirar de reflejos para evitar el gol de Lucas. Para colmo, Mazraoui fue expulsado y se perderá la vuelta. La mejor noticia para el Ajax fue el resultado y la seguridad de jugar la vuelta en Amsterdam.
Ganaron el Brujas y el Slavia de Praga
Tampoco se prodigó especialmente en ataque el Brujas, aunque no lo necesitó el conjunto belga para alzarse con la victoria (0-1) en su visita al campo del LASK Linz austríaco gracias a un gol de penalti de Hans Vanaken a los diez minutos.
Un penalti no exento de polémica, ya que la acción del defensa local Gernot Trauner sobre Loïs Openda que el colegiado sancionó con la pena máxima no pareció lo suficientemente clara para tan severo castigo.
Hans Vaneken tuvo que esperar casi un par de minutos con el balón ya colocado sobre el punto de penalti para lanzar la pena máxima, hasta que el videoarbitraje confirmó la decisión del colegiado.
Vaneken marcó y puso con ventaja al Brujas en una eliminatoria que se resolverá en el duelo de vuelta la próxima semana en el estadio Jan Breydel.
Igualmente tendrá que esperar al choque de vuelta el Slavia de Praga, pese a la victoria (0-1) que cosechó este martes en su visita al campo del Cluj rumano, que desperdició un penalti a los 78 minutos.
Pero todo el acierto que le faltó al delantero francés Billel Omrani, que no fue capaz de transformar la pena máxima, le sobró al checo Lukas Masopust, que firmó a los 28 el gol de la victoria del Slavia con un espectacular remate desde fuera del área, tras empalar de primera un saque de esquina botado por el rumano Nicolae Stanciu.
