Bayern Munich won the German Super Cup on Saturday evening, as they beat Stuttgart 2-1.
Vincent Kompany fielded Luis Diaz on the left flank as the former Liverpool star made his competitive debut for Bayern, since completing his €75 million (£66m/$88m) move from Anfield earlier this summer.
The German champions made a fiery start in the game and took the lead in the 18th minute through Harry Kane's strike. Leon Goretzka initiated the move in the Stuttgart half as he found Michael Olise with a pass. The former Crystal Palace man took a quick touch before sending a through ball in Kane's direction. Luca Jaquez did manage to intercept the ball initially but his heavy touch inside the box allowed Kane to pounce on it as the England striker found the back of the net with a first-time attempt.
Bayern did create a few more goalscoring opportunities in the first half, however, Stuttgart defended resiliently and stopped the giants from extending their lead before the break.
Just 12 minutes into the second half, Kane picked up a yellow card for a rough challenge as he stamped on the opposition's foot, while trying to win the ball. Just past the hour mark, Olise had a golden opportunity to score his team's second goal as he attempted a header from a very close range from Serge Gnabry's cross but the Frenchman's attempt went over the crossbar.
Stuttgart had their best chance to equalise in the 74th minute when Jamie Leweling attempted a shot on goal from a long range. Leweling's pile driver took a deflection of Dayot Upamecano and surprised Manuel Neuer a bit, but the veteran goalkeeper pulled off a brilliant save as he parried the ball over the crossbar.
Shortly after Neuer's brilliant save, Diaz opened his account as a Bayern player as the ex-Reds star scored from Serge Gnabry's inch-perfect cross in the 74th minute. The Colombian paid a touching tribute to his former team-mate Diogo Jota by emulating his 'Gamer' celebration.
Leweling finally got his name on the scoresheet in the injury time as he headed the ball into the net to pull one back for his side. However, Bayern eventually reigned supreme as Neuer won his eighth German Super Cup title, equalling former team-mate Thomas Muller's record.

Diaz enjoyed a dream competitive debut for the Bavarian side as he scored the second goal of the match from Gnabry's cross and sealed the Super Cup title for his club. The Colombia international had an impressive outing as he showed some silky touches with the ball and was constantly active on the left flank.

22-year-old Stuttgart centre-back Jaquez had a night to forget as his poor first touch inside the box practically gifted Kane with an opportunity to break the deadlock, which the England captain grabbed with both hands. On a night when the Stuttgart defence did fairly well defensively, one mistake from the Switzerland international cost them the game.
