Sesko is set to move to Old Trafford this summer
Manchester United are taking a risk in committing huge money for Benjamin Sesko to complete their attacking line-up for next season, but they are all-in on him leading them back towards Premier League glory.
Their growing belief has been that this is a player who has the true potential to take them back to the summit of English football.
Sources have told Flashscore that United have tracked Sesko over the past three seasons - and looked very seriously into a deal last summer.
As such, United have extremely detailed documents on what he will bring to the team and how they can get the best from him.
Insiders had continued to suggest this summer that he was not the man at the top of Ruben Amorim’s own wishlist. Victor Osimhen was a preferred option at the beginning of summer, Viktor Gyokeres was someone he knew he could get goals from if they were reunited, and Ollie Watkins has the traits that could have made him a quick success within the current system.
Yet the opportunity to sign Sesko brings long-term hope. The 22-year-old Slovenia international could become one of the leading names in European football over the next decade if he fulfils his potential.
Sesko's recent stats
When United decided to prioritise a deal for him last week, they did not intend to pay quite as much as they are going to - with a bid of €75million with an extra €10million in bonuses due later.
Discussions with RB Leipzig around the numbers involved are still continuing at a time when Sesko is choosing United over Newcastle. Personal terms are already agreed.
Last season Sesko only scored 13 goals in the Bundesliga, yet one of the main reasons United are signing Sesko is because they want him to become their main goal source.
It is understood that United’s leading analytical staff have identified how to get more from the player in order to thrive within the system Amorim is striving towards.
His current style of play will be adapted and Christopher Vivell has led the charge on convincing key figures within the club on how and why they should take this chance on him.
It is considered that his finishing power, pace and aerial ability are attributes that are going to be utilised as he begins life at Old Trafford, alongside fellow new signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
By signing this trio, United have directly attempted to address the fact they only scored 44 league goals last season.
That is around 20 goals short of being able to realistically compete for the top four positions, but Amorim now has a strike force which should be more reliable.
Once Sesko is confirmed, United can begin to set their full expectations for the new season.
But, ultimately, United are aiming for signings like this to lead them back towards winning the Premier League.
If all goes to plan, he will make his debut against Arsenal - where he will go head to head with Gyokeres.
