James Trafford Man City GFX
Manchester City have completed the signing of goalkeeper James Trafford from Burnley, beating Newcastle United to his signature. The 22-year-old, who originally left the Etihad for Turf Moor in 2023, rejoins on a long-term contract, committing to a five-year deal with an option for an additional season.
WHAT HAPPENED?
The transfer is seen as part of City’s plan to restructure their goalkeeping unit ahead of the new campaign, with Trafford now in line to push first-choice keeper Ederson for the No.1 spot. The Premier League giants have paid £27 million ($36m) to reacquire Trafford, who was sold just last summer for £14m ($19m). Originally, Burnley were in line to receive around £31m ($41m), including add-ons from any other club, but City’s contractual advantage allowed them to secure a reduced fee.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Newcastle had shown a strong interest in Trafford, with manager Eddie Howe identifying him as a top target to bolster their goalkeeping ranks. However, the player opted to reject a move to St James’ Park, instead choosing to return to City, and challenge Ederson for the No.1 spot.
WHAT TRAFFORD SAID
After signing on the dotted line, Trafford said: "Rejoining City is such a special and proud moment both for me and my family. I always dreamed that one day I would be able to come back to Manchester City. This is the place I call home - it's a truly special football club with fantastic people who make it such a unique place to work and play.
"I am also very excited and honoured to have been given the opportunity to work under Pep and with such a world-class group of players. I am still very young and hungry to keep learning and improving - and I know there is no better environment than Manchester City to help make me become the best goalkeeper I can be. I also cannot wait to play in front of the amazing City fans for the first time and will do everything I can to help this great club look to achieve even more success."
DID YOU KNOW
The arrival of Trafford now paves the way for changes in City's current goalkeeper hierarchy. Stefan Ortega, who featured in 13 Premier League games last season and impressed in cup competitions, is expected to leave the club this summer. While Ortega’s departure seems increasingly likely, no deal has yet been completed. Burnley, who just lost Trafford, are reportedly interested in bringing the German goalkeeper to Turf Moor, but talks are still in the early stages.

WHAT NEXT FOR TRAFFORD?
At 22, Trafford is seen as a long-term project with the potential to eventually succeed Ederson as City’s primary goalkeeper. As Guardiola prepares his side for another intense season, competition for places, especially in goal, looks set to be fiercer than ever.
