Despite enduring an intense summer campaign in the United States for the expanded Club World Cup, Chelsea have not been granted any scheduling leniency by the Premier League. The Blues are set to kick off their 2025-26 league season at home against Crystal Palace on Sunday, August 17, just over a month after completing their Club World Cup final in New Jersey.
WHAT HAPPENED?
According to The Daily Mail, the Premier League has rejected any possibility of rescheduling the opening fixture, leaving Enzo Maresca with little time to prepare for the London derby against Palace. Though the Club World Cup has brought significant financial reward, nearly £80 million ($109m) in revenue, the physical toll on the players has raised concerns within the club.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Upon their return to the UK, Chelsea players are expected to be granted a minimum three-week recovery period, as recommended for athletes following a hectic campaign. That would place their return to the Cobham training ground around Tuesday, August 5, leaving the team with barely a dozen days to prepare for the Premier League curtain-raiser.

DID YOU KNOW?
Maresca will have to rely on fringe players to plug gaps during that transition. Members of the so-called “bomb squad”, including Ben Chilwell and Joao Felix, could be called upon for the early friendlies and potentially the league opener if their transfer situations remain unresolved.

WHAT NEXT FOR CHELSEA?
This episode highlights the increasing strain placed on elite footballers by a calendar growing ever more crowded. With international tournaments, club competitions, and expanded FIFA events like the Club World Cup eating into off-seasons, recovery and preparation windows are shrinking. However, in the short term, Maresca has little time to think about the Palace fixture as a cup final looms on the horizon, where they will face either Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain on July 13.
