The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup debuts in Miami, USA, with a brand-new look. 32 top clubs will gather together to kick off the ultimate showdown among clubs. Group A takes center stage in the opening matches, featuring giants from four continents. Carrying distinct football cultures and historic missions, they will showcase their prowess on the the pitch this summer.
FC Porto
FC Porto, is a club based in the northern Portuguese city of Porto and is hailed as one of the "Big Three" in the Primeira Liga. Founded in 1893, FC Porto have been dominating in various competitions since 1922, establishing themselves as powerhouses with deep roots in Portuguese football.
FC Porto won back-to-back league titles in the 1977-78 and 1978-79 seasons and in 1987, they defeated Bayern Munich in the UEFA CL final to claim their first European trophy, completing a historic treble that season. In more recent years, FC Porto have maintained their prestige among many top European clubs. They won the UEFA Cup in 2003 (the first for a Portuguese side) and secured their second Champions League trophy in the club's history in 2004. Domestically, FC Porto have been utterly dominant, with 30 top-flight league titles and 20 Taca de Portugal titles. They have been perennial powerhouse in European football.
Tactically, FC Porto build from a solid defensive foundation, featuring incisive counterattacks and exceptional set-piece execution. European competition experience and resilience are their winning strategies. In terms of players, FC Porto have long been sending promising new stars to top clubs. This season, the player who has drawn much attention from FC Porto is the midfielder Alan Varela. This 23-year-old Argentine defensive midfielder started his career in youth side of Boca Juniors and was spotted by FC Porto before moving on to European competitions. He is renowned for his precise tackles and efficient counterattacks, earning him the title of "midfield shield" and becoming a prime target of many top clubs.
Palmeiras
Palmeiras, century-old powerhouses in Brazilian football, will pose a considerable threat in Group A. Founded in 1914, they've rebranded twice in their history while consistently challenging for top honors. They've firmly established themselves as South America's elite.
Palmeiras enjoyed a golden era between 1932-1934 when they claimed three consecutive state championships in the Rio-Sao Paulo Tournament. The club made history in 1951 by winning the inaugural Copa Rio (precursor to the Club World Cup). Despite enduring a 16-year title drought, suffering relegation, and going through fallow periods, Palmeiras have repeatedly risen from adversity. In recent years, under Portuguese manager Abel Ferreira, Palmeiras have reached new heights. They secured back-to-back Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A titles in 2022 and 2023, and also claimed the Brazil Super Cup in 2023. Palmeiras remain one of the most dominant forces in South American football.
Palmeiras are renowned for their attacking brand of football, combining blistering wing play with midfield dominance – a perfect fusion of South American flair and European tactical discipline. The club's brightest prospect is 18-year-old sensation Estevao, dubbed "Little Messi". He is valued at 55 million euros and is the offensive core of the team, with extremely high efficiency. His ability to break through on the wing and set pieces is truly outstanding.
Al Ahly SC
Al Ahly SC stand as the undisputed kings of African football. Founded in 1907, they have claimed 43 Egyptian Premier League titles and 12 CAF Champions League trophies, earning them the moniker "Real Madrid of Africa". Their most recent triumph came in May 2024, when they edged Esperance Sportive de Tunis in a tense final. After a goalless first leg, Al Ahly SC secured a narrow 1-0 victory at home in the return leg to lift the CAF Champions League trophy once again.
Al Ahly SC have built their success on intense physicality and lightning-fast counterattacks, while maintaining surprisingly refined technical play. Tunisian defender Ali Maaloul is the leader of the team's defensive line, combining rock-solid defending with dangerous attacking overlaps. Up front, striker Wessam Abou Ali often has a high offensive efficiency on the field.
Inter Miami CF
As host nation of this edition of the FIFA Club World Cup, Major League Soccer (MLS) side Inter Miami CF automatically qualify as one of the tournament hosts. With superstars like Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, and Jordi Alba in the squad, Inter Miami CF have also attracted much attention.
In 2018, MLS announced that retired star David Beckham had officially obtained the MLS expansion rights for a team based in Miami. In 2020, the team officially participated in MLS. In June 2023, Argentine superstar Lionel Messi joined the team. In August of the same year, the team won the final of the Leagues Cup, claiming their first championship in history. In October 2024, Inter Miami CF won their first MLS regular-season title in club history, setting a new MLS regular-season points record.
Inter Miami CF base their tactics around Messi, prioritizing possession play with midfield dominance and set-piece danger. Still, they rely too heavily on their stars, which limits their consistency. There is no doubt that Messi is the core player of the team. Despite being 38, Messi recorded 21 goals and 11 assists in the 2024 season. His outstanding individual ability and rich experience in major competitions will be crucial for the team in the FIFA Club World Cup.
Group A promises a spectacle: FC Porto's European grit, Palmeiras' South American creativity, Al Ahly SC's African resilience, and Inter Miami CF's North American energy will collide in the FIFA Club World Cup. This is a fiery clash of four continental cultures and a thrilling duel of their footballing charms, which is definitely worth looking forward to.
