Chelsea are reportedly in negotiations with Borussia Dortmund to rip up their existing Carney Chukwuemeka loan agreement and draft one up which covers the Club World Cup. But frustratingly for Blues co-owner Todd Boehly, Dortmund are understood to have no intention of pursuing Chukwuemeka on a permanent basis this summer.
Both clubs are off to the USA for the Club World Cup, and Chukwuemeka is so far down Enzo Maresca's pecking order that the Blues are open to extending his loan move. The current deal runs until June 30 - two weeks before the end of the tournament. And according to The Athletic, discussions are taking place over a revised agreement.
Chukwuemeka seemingly has no future at Chelsea while Maresca is at the helm. He made only one start across all competitions during the first half of the season, after being assigned to the infamous 'bomb squad' of Blues players who were deemed surplus to requirements last summer.
Chelsea are expected to try and sell the 21-year-old permanently during the current window, and Dortmund have the opportunity to take him off their hands via the £30million buy option included in their loan agreement.
However, the report adds that BVB have no plans to trigger the clause. Nine of Chukwuemeka's 10 Bundesliga appearances during the loan spell came off the bench, as with two of his three Champions League games.

The midfielder did find the net once, and he could put forward an improved case to Dortmund bosses by pulling up trees at the Club World Cup. But as things stand, Boehly and co. will be tasked with scouting out another permanent buyer over the coming weeks.
Chukwuemeka, who graduated from Aston Villa's academy and made 16 appearances for the West Midlands side before completing a £20m move to Stamford Bridge in 2022, is believed to have suitors in the Premier League and elsewhere in Europe.
A host of other fringe players are set to leave Chelsea this summer. Raheem Sterling, Ben Chilwell, Armando Broja, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Axel Disasi and Joao Felix all spent the season out on loan, and permanent exits could be on the horizon.
The likes of Renato Veiga, Lesley Ugochukwu and Alfie Gilchrist also have uncertain futures. Christopher Nkunku is in line to move on following the signing of Liam Delap, while Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall could search for guaranteed first-team minutes elsewhere.
