Steven Schumacher confident he can turn Bolton into title contenders next season
{by} PA

Bolton boss Steven Schumacher insists he will not waste time from turning Bolton from Sky Bet League One also-rans into genuine promotion candidates.

Josh Dacres-Cogley’s 66th-minute goal – his first of the season – was cancelled out by fellow substitute Jake Young 10 minutes later.

“We need to get to work and make sure we are better next season,” confirmed the frustrated Wanderers head coach.

“This squad is incapable of achieving what we need to achieve. The players’ meetings are scheduled for Monday when I will have conversations with the individuals.

“Obviously, there will be players leaving and others who will be told they aren’t in the plans for next year.

“And work is already under way to try and recruit to give us a chance to get what we want next year. So, there are big decisions to make.”

Wanderers’ end-of-season fade out cost them a play-off place, failing to win any of their last six games to finish a disappointing eighth.

“That game sums up our season,” sighed Schumacher as John McAtee, Szabi Schon and Aaron Collins wasted glorious early chances.

“The first 15 minutes, the game should have been over. We had three of the best chances you could create. We didn’t take any of them.

“It became a scrap when it didn’t need to be. We managed to get in front from a nice worked set-play.

“But then we get sloppy and it summed them up – sloppy and loose. We could quite possibly have lost the game because Stevenage had the better chances late on.”

Stevenage finished the campaign in 14th place, leaving boss Alex Revell with mixed emotions.

“We would have taken it because of the strength of the league,” he said.

“Does that mean we accept it? No, because we want to be higher and we have such a brilliant platform to build on for next season.

“We have got to come back fitter, stronger and ready to get into that top group.

“Ultimately, it is about staying in this league which we did without ever being near that bottom group. But we have always tried to push up.

“This group is resilient and does what a lot are searching for when they sign players.

“So, it is important to keep it together and build on it. We are going into our third year in League One so where do we want to go?

“I know the chairman and everyone at the club has given real backing to try and push on. We just want to continue to build.”
