Shrewsbury manager Micheal Appleton said his side gave a massive effort after they beat Barnsley 2-1 at Oakwell.
A John Marquis double was enough to give the already-relegated Shrews the points despite a Jon Russell consolation.
Appleton said: “I think what we did today is created a platform to play from. We played well and mixed it up a little bit when we had to.
“It’s difficult when you go behind to try and overturn it and we’ve missed the opportunity to score first a few times since I’ve been here but we got that goal today.
“Barnsley did have a few opportunities today but you’d expect that with them being at home and the quality of players they’ve got on the pitch but we rode the storm and I’m so glad we’ve been able to give the fans a win.
“We dropped a little bit after the second goal and I’ve been there as a player. Normally you’d want to be a bit more eager to get up the pitch but when you’re on a long run without a win it’s just a natural thing to do when you take the lead.
“We gave it a massive amount of effort today. We scored two impressive goals and defended really well and put our bodies on the line when we needed to.”
Barnsley boss Conor Hourihane said he was embarrassed by his team’s performance.
Hourihane said: “I’m trying not to get too irate about it because at the moment we know where the club is at if we’re being honest.
“I’m embarrassed and I hope my players are embarrassed too. It’s got to hurt. There is so much work that goes into trying to get results; you try and squeeze everything out of the group.
“You put faith in them to go and perform and that’s not been the case enough this season. In my tenure, I’ve been very fortunate to get the role I’ve been given but another big glaring thing in my face is that a lot of changes need to happen.
“I really thought the lads would bring a performance to the table today. It wasn’t to be, which is disappointing, but I know where the squad is. I think people need to realise the situation we’ve got in front of us.
“We have to use the fans’ reaction as a motivation. I will be. I don’t blame them for giving criticism out to me and the lads to be honest with you.
“I’m not surprised. The fans have had a couple of tough years, a tough year this year and it’s tough still under me. I’m hoping over time that can be flipped around.”
