Barnsley head coach Conor Hourihane was disappointed not to beat Peterborough but pleased to pick up his first point since taking up the position after the battling 1-1 draw at Oakwell.
Ricky-Jade Jones gave the visitors the lead before Jonathan Russell levelled. The result secured Peterborough’s Sky Bet League One status, while the Tykes remain in 12th place.
Hourihane said afterwards: “They (Peterborough) never really looked like a threat in the second half.
“Overall, it was OK. We created good chances in the second half and scored a good goal in the first half, so there were some positives.
“We created some decent chances and got into some good areas, particularly down that right-hand side.
“‘Davo’ [Davis Keillor-Dunn] had a couple of chances which he has put away a lot of times over the course of the season but he has had an amazing season so there will be no one pointing the finger at him.
“There’s a really big push from me to win our last home game (against
Shrewsbury) to finish in a decent period heading into pre-season.”
Hourihane discussed the club’s direction heading into next season, saying, “There needs to be a big reset in the club. Everyone knows that. I’ve made it very clear. There’s loads of things going on behind the scenes.”
Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson was not enthralled by his side’s performance but was proud they earned the point they needed for survival.
Ferguson said: “It wasn’t a very nice game, it wasn’t a good spectacle for me, I didn’t really enjoy it. We suffered again with final decision and weight of pass, things like that.
“We are the only team who can concede a goal like that. Our full-back throws the ball back and then we have two players trying to dribble in the middle of the pitch. Unbelievable stuff. It’s been a constant throughout the season.
“We knew he (Russell) had the quality and it’s a great finish, but it should never get to that position.
“They were the more dominant team. It was almost a performance where we just had to get over the line and we have managed to do that.
“If you look at the season as a whole it won’t go down as one of the greatest we’ve had, but I’m proud of everyone’s effort.
“It doesn’t surprise me that we weren’t challenging this season if I’m honest because of the changes that we made and the players we lost.
“When all these things are added up, it’s no real surprise that we aren’t where we normally are in League One. We had to make sure it wasn’t a horrible season in terms of relegation. Obviously, the added bonus was winning the (Vertu) trophy.”
