West Brom head coach Tony Mowbray was delighted with Tom Fellows’ performance and commitment after he made two assists in the 2-1 win over Watford in the Sky Bet Championship.
The Baggies relied on several moments of brilliance from Fellows as he set up Karlan Grant and Mikey Johnston in the victory at The Hawthorns.
West Brom moved up to seventh in the table, whereas Watford, who have now lost three games in their last five despite Moussa Sissoko’s consolation, slipped down to 11th place.
Mowbray lauded the youngster’s performance and was pleased with his level of confidence.
“Fellows is a wonderful, wonderful player. He is a very unassuming boy,” he said.
“He never knocks on my door’s saying, ‘why am I not playing? I feel like deserved to play’.
“He just accepts my decisions and gets on with it. He’s a dream footballer to manage, really.”
Despite the Hornets dominating possession, the hosts created the better quality of chances that got them the two goals to win.
Mowbray applauded his team and staff for being able to pull through during a difficult time for the Baggies, which saw them lose three matches in a row.
“Having to deal with the three results that came in the last 10 days and I’ve said repeatedly, I think the performance level of those games were really high and could easily have won all of them games,” he added.
“Yet we find ourselves winning a game with 39 per cent possession today.
“It’s not how I really want to play, but it opens the question to letting the opposition have more of the ball and played in the species that they leave as they come on to you.
“We could have scored more than we did today. I think we had five big chances.
“I think when you’ve got the speed of Fellows, Grant and Mikey Johnson, sometimes maybe [it is better] to let the opposition have the ball.”
Watford head coach Tom Cleverley thought his team was the better team on Saturday, but West Brom were the “more effective” one.
“I felt like we had more, we had more control of the ball, but I feel like sometimes it doesn’t always have to be perfect football,” he said.
“I thought they were more effective than us and I think you could argue we were the better team, but they were the more effective team.
“We didn’t use the deep balls as much as we should today. I thought there was desire to run in behind, we just need to play that ball a bit more often.”
Cleverley also talked about how his side could have done much more in the final third.
“Today, we lack the level of clinical nature in the final third, and a bit of quality to add to that as well,” he added.
“There’s a lot to like about the foundations and stability of how we’re playing for next season but ultimately, you’d rather be the effective team.
“We’re expecting a lot from Mamadou Doumbia, who has come from Mali, and 19-year-old Rocco Vata, who’s started the last three.
“These are players with quality, but to become effective with that quality is what they’re learning on the job and they’ll be much better for it next season.”
