Shrewsbury boss Gareth Ainsworth insists he can turn things around if he is given time after their 1-0 loss at home to Stevenage.
Harvey White’s deflected strike, which went down as an Aaron Pierre own goal, ended the visitors’ four-match winless run in League One games.
Shrewsbury sit seven points off safety but Ainsworth, who arrived in November, is confident he is the right person to improve the club’s fortunes.
“We didn’t really attack like we have been attacking lately,” said Ainsworth. “I was pleased with the way we defended, and there were no shots on target for Stevenage today.
“It was a tough game against a very physical side. We had a plan at the start, but it didn’t really come off and we didn’t get in behind them.
“The own goal is not great, but like I say, they didn’t have a shot on target all game. They hit the post with a cross and you have to take that, it’s one of them.
“We have to take our chances. We didn’t attack well today, and that is the whole team.
“To lose by one goal in the last three games is tough to take but it just shows where we have come and how far we have grown as a team.
“I know we have improved as a team, and everyone else knows that we have as well.
“Give me some time, and I will make this club very good.”
A delighted Stevenage boss Alex Revell said: “It’s exactly what we needed. I would have liked it to have been a few more goals, but it’s exactly what we needed away from home.
“A clean sheet, resilience, spirit, attitude to work for each other, wide players worked exceptionally hard to make sure they were in shape, so everything about it was what we needed.
“Since Gareth (Ainsworth) has taken over, they beat Birmingham and lost by a goal to Bolton but were good and obviously, on Tuesday, they lost 1-0 to Huddersfield but could have easily won that game.
“You know you are coming to a team that are absolutely fighting to get out of the position they are in, and you have to withstand that first and foremost, and I thought everyone did that.
“We had really good opportunities, but we didn’t take them, but it is not about that today. It’s not about stats, it’s about winning.”
