Darren Ferguson believes his Peterborough side showed the confidence needed to get out of trouble after they secured their first away league win since August.
Skipper Hector Kyprianou’s headed goal kept Ferguson’s men out of the relegation zone – and led to fifth-placed Huddersfield being booed off by sections of their crowd following a 1-0 defeat.
Huddersfield have now failed to score in their last five home games.
Ferguson said: “It was very deserved. We should have won by more really but I can’t complain because of how long it’s been since we won away from home.
“I thought we started the game very well and we were very confident. We played with that belief to get us out of trouble. And we showed a bit of grit towards the end.
“We put bodies on the line which we have to do for the last third of the season. That should give the players confidence. Our performance was full of confidence given the position we are in.
“I felt everyone contributed. The first half was probably the best we’ve played for a long time.
“We’ve got to make sure it’s not a false dawn. We’ve got to find some consistency. But I am pleased for the players and fans. The fans would have enjoyed this and they wouldn’t have enjoyed many away days recently.”
Huddersfield manager Michael Duff wants to free his team up as they have gone more than 450 minutes since scoring at the John Smith’s Stadium.
The Terriers are in the play-off zone but now have a host of sides breathing down their necks.
Duff said: “I won’t try and mask it. The performance was nowhere near the required levels and that hasn’t happened that many times.
“We got beat by the better team today unfortunately. It looked like there was a real lack of energy from the first minute. I don’t know if it’s the injuries that are catching up with us.”
The Huddersfield manager confirmed that Tom Lees could be out with a long-term leg injury.
The Town boss added: “There’s a weird feeling in the stadium. I understand supporters’ frustrations.
“We are not delusional. We haven’t scored a goal at home for a long time and we are fully aware of that. The performance was inexcusable.
“There’s obviously a little bit of apprehension in the team. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to see that.
“They do care. And it’s not easy. It’s a difficult place to play at the minute.
“We are fifth in the league and it feels like the end of the world. We are trying to free them up a little bit.
“The supporters are clearly frustrated and it’s just a negative spiral. And it’s our job to get supporters out of their seats so that’s not me putting it on the supporters at all. We need to be better and give them more to cheer about.”
