Wycombe head coach Mike Dodds admitted he was “frustrated” after his side were held to a goalless draw by mid-table Wigan at Adams Park.
In a game of few chances, Fred Onyedinma, Josh Scowen and Caleb Taylor had the Chairboys’ best opportunities, as Latics goalkeeper Sam Tickle was left with little to do.
Despite having 12 shots on goal, only three were on target as Wanderers lacked that final bit of quality.
Wigan defended brilliantly, with Jenson Weir and Will Aimson behind nearly every block and clearance.
Wycombe remain second on 64 points, six points behind Birmingham who have two games in hand.
Dodds said: “I am frustrated in terms of the scoreline, but the performance was very dominant and controlled.
“We needed that moment but it never came, unlike Tuesday night (against Bristol Rovers).
“The longer the game went on, as they came with a game plan to frustrate us, they gained hope while we became a bit more desperate in terms of our play.
“That won’t be the first game I will be involved in that will be frustrating, and today was just one of those days.
“We accept it, get the point and move on.
“We just needed a little bit of luck for the ball to bounce in the right moments but it never did.
“We’ll dust ourselves down and go again for Birmingham.”
Since taking over from Matt Bloomfield at the start of February, Dodds has won one of his three games in charge, drawing three, with Wanderers keeping three clean sheets in that time.
For Wigan, a point and a clean sheet against the side who have scored the most goals in League One this season was a big coup as they edge away from the drop.
Boss Shaun Maloney said: “We had to work for it and the performance with the ball could be better but I actually enjoyed what we did without the ball.
“I did like how we started in the opening 10 minutes but we showed a lot of effort, we didn’t give up big chances and I’m pretty sure three or four weeks ago we would have lost that game.
“It was a really hard match but I believe the players gave everything.
“I know that we can 100 per cent play better with the ball as we can be braver, but we defended very well.”
