Grant McCann praised his 10-man Doncaster side’s spirit after they returned to winning ways and moved up to third with a 1-0 League Two victory over second-bottom Morecambe at the Mazuma Stadium.
An early goal from Rob Street was enough to give Grant McCann’s side the win despite the fact they were reduced to 10 men after 70 minutes when Jack Senior was sent off for a crude lunge on Ged Garner as Morecambe remained 23rd.
McCann said: “I think the game had a bit of everything on a shocking pitch which wasn’t conducive to football but we got the job done.
“We could have been three or four up in the first 10 minutes but got a good goal to get ahead from Rob Street.
“They came at us in the second half like we knew they would and with players like Marcus Dackers in their side, we knew they would be a threat but we handled it well.
“I said a few words after we lost on Saturday but tonight we showed what a strong group we are, especially after seeing Jack Senior sent off and we have a tremendous dressing room which we could see tonight.”
Lincoln loanee Street scored the only goal of the game in the fourth minute as he headed home an excellent Luke Molyneux cross and from there Rovers had chances to extend their lead.
Street missed an open goal in the second half after rounding Morecambe substitute goalkeeper Harry Burgoyne and Jordan Gibson shot over after showing great skill to get in a free run on goal.
When Senior was sent off with 20 minutes to go, the home side threw bodies forward but only produced one effort of note when Gwion Edwards drew an easy save from Teddy Sharman-Lowe.
Morecambe boss Derek Adams said the narrow defeat was an all too familiar story.
It was the 12th time the Shrimps had lost by the 1-0 scoreline this season with Adams bemoaning a lack of quality in the final third of the pitch.
He said: “It was a similar story to the rest of the season in many ways.
“We had lots of possession and dominated the second half and flashed a few crosses across goal but despite getting into good areas, we didn’t threaten their goal.
“We had 16 efforts but only one on target which says a lot and that says it all.
“Doncaster started really well and got the goal up that helped them and they could have had a few more to be fair. But we stuck in the game and gave our all once again but just need that quality where it matters.”
