Arsenal defender William Saliba is wanted by Real Madrid, who are in the market for a new centre-back, but the Gunners will demand a world record fee for the Frenchman
Arsenal have made clear their demands for William Saliba
Arsenal are reportedly only willing to let William Saliba join Real Madrid if the Spanish giants cough up a record-breaking fee for a defender.
Saliba, who joined the Gunners from Saint-Etienne in 2019, has grown into one of the most sought-after centre-backs in world football.
He was instrumental in Arsenal's near-miss Premier League title bid last season and continues to be a key figure in Mikel Arteta's squad this term. With Madrid on the hunt for a new centre-back, 23-year-old Saliba is said to be their top choice.
However, he's contracted with Arsenal until 2027 and the London club won't let him go cheaply. RMC Sport reports that Arsenal would only consider a record fee, preferably not selling at all.
The current record stands at the £78.3million Manchester United shelled out for Harry Maguire in 2019, closely followed by Manchester City's Josko Gvardiol (£77m). Saliba isn't the only defender on Madrid's wishlist, with Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold also being eyed up after Dani Carvajal's injury, although Liverpool are not keen to sell.
Alexander-Arnold could be on the move when his contract expires this summer. However, securing a deal for Saliba might prove more challenging. Although a potential transfer for Vinicius Junior could provide the necessary funds for the Champions League winners.
The Athletic reports that the Brazilian has turned down Madrid's initial contract offer. Like Saliba, his current contract is valid until 2027, and the Ballon d'Or runner-up reportedly wants a salary that reflects his status as one of the world's top players.
The ex-Flamengo star has expressed his wish to remain in Madrid for the foreseeable future. However, his agents have reportedly explored a possible move to the Saudi Pro League, and interest from the Gulf state could resurface in the summer.
Meanwhile, Saliba is among a group of Arsenal players who have flown to Dubai for a warm-weather training camp ahead of their next Premier League match on February 15. Fellow defender Ben White, who is nearing a return from knee surgery after a three-month absence, is also part of the group.
Real Madrid willing to wait for William SalibaLos Blancos are keen to bring the Frenchman to the Santiago Bernabeu and unite him with compatriot Kylian Mbappe but face tough negotiations with Arsenal. The Gunners are believed to be demanding a hefty fee for their star defender and as a result, Madrid are happy to back off and sign Saliba on a cheaper deal in 2026, or wait until his contract expire...
