Manchester United fans sang a brutal X-rated chant at co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe at Fulham as they made their feelings very clear.
United travelled to London on Sunday evening and the away support were in full voice throughout, as a Lisandro Martinez effort from distance won the three points in a 1-0 victory. But the United faithful aimed some of their chants at Ratcliffe, who sat in the stands.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe had to listen to angry Manchester United fans sending him a very clear message at Fulham
Ratcliffe bought a 27.7% stake in United at a cost of £1.3billion over a year ago, assuming full control of the football operations while the unpopular Glazers kept their majority share.
The INEOS chief’s arrival hasn’t been positive among the supporters with Ratcliffe cutting 250 jobs, stripping Sir Alex Ferguson of his ambassadorial role, hiking ticket prices across the board, scrapping concessions for children and pensioners, and binning a fund for former players worth £40,000, among other heavily criticised moves.
United fans’ anger evidently boiled over at Craven Cottage as supporters could be heard singing: “Just like the Glazers, Jim Ratcliffe’s a c***”. While Ratcliffe was awkwardly sitting in the stand, alongside INEOS right-hand man Sir Dave Brailsford.
Chants of “£66 you are taking the p***” could also be heard from the away end in reference to Ratcliffe increasing ticket prices almost a third to £66. A banner was also raised in the Stretford End during United’s win against Rangers in midweek taking aim at the pricing, saying: “Your debt not ours” in a clear message.
United fans on social media also backed the chants from the crowd as one user wrote: “Sing it loud and clear,” while a second replied: “And the c*** heard it”. A third added: “One of the highlights of the night,” as they heard the chants.
Ratcliffe’s decision to raise ticket prices led to protests outside of Old Trafford before recent games. However, the INEOS chief attempted to defend the controversial hike, saying: "I don't think it makes sense for a Manchester United ticket to cost less than a ticket to see Fulham.
"I don't want to end up in a position where the genuine local fans can't afford to come but I do want to optimise the ticketing. We need to find a balance - and you can't be popular all the time either.”
In a letter to United fan groups The 1958 and Fan Coalition 58, United stated they must “act now” to avoid the club falling in danger of breaching Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR). United said losses over the past three years totalled more than £300million, leaving them nearly £200m over budget.
"This is not sustainable," the club said. "We will have to make some difficult choices. That has included a significant reduction to our workforce as well as cuts across many areas of spend across our club.
"We do not expect fans to make up all the current shortfall - but we do need to look at our ticketing strategy to ensure we are charging the right amount, and offering the right discounts, across our products for our fans."
United are one step further to seeing a new 100,000-capacity super-stadium built after the redevelopment project was given the green light.
Ratcliffe’s plan to revamp Old Trafford into a state-of-the-art stadium was backed by the government this weekend. The plan to transform the stadium and local area is yet to decide whether Old Trafford undergoes a renovation or is rebuilt.
