Port Vale boss Darren Moore felt his side showed their character after a late goal from Ethan Chislett gave the League Two leaders a battling 1-0 win over bottom club Morecambe.
Chislett scored the decisive goal of the game seven minutes from time in a game where the Valiants were put under pressure by a home side who put in a performance that belied their league position.
Vale’s victory moved them five points clear at the top of the table and Moore was proud of his side’s perseverance.
“Sometimes you take more from games like this than any others because Morecambe caused us problems with their commitment and their endeavour,” Moore said.
“They asked a lot of questions of us but credit to our boys.
“They showed a lot of character, kept going and consistently did the right thing which led to our goal.
“You could see Morecambe were getting tired after about 70 minutes so it was great to be able to bring on some fresh legs.
“We had to do everything in our power to keep going and we got the all important touch that won us the game from the set piece.”
On a day where Morecambe fans protested against the owners for a lack of progress in the sale of the club, manager Derek Adams said his side deserved something from the game.
Ben Tollitt missed a golden opportunity from an Adam Lewis cross after 15 minutes while Jamie Stott saw his effort ruled out for offside in the second half.
But the Shrimps remain without a home league win all season and sit three points from safety.
Adams said: “I thought it was a really good game and we competed well.
“We had two great opportunities to go ahead in the first half but didn’t take them. We were going at them and causing them problems and dealt with their threat until they scored late on.
“It was a big moment that we didn’t deal with and that has been the story of our season in many ways.
“I have to be delighted with the way we competed against the side who are top of the table and I cannot fault the way we played and our effort, but we have to do better at the crucial times.
“I didn’t think they deserved to win the game because I didn’t think there was much difference in the sides.”
