Karl Robinson was delighted as Salford advanced to the FA Cup second round with a 2-1 win over Shrewsbury.
Salford raced into a lead through Matthew Lund’s early goal before John Marquis pulled Shrewsbury level after 15 minutes.
Lund completed his brace before half-time as Salford re-gained the lead, before George Lloyd had his second-half strike chalked off for off-side.
Robinson, who rotated his squad, was overjoyed with the resilience younger players showed to overcome higher-level opposition.
He said: “To put in a performance like that is a testament to the players. Together, they’ve shown a style of play that is a credit to the football club.
“We won our duels and we were aggressive. We need to score more goals though, but in the last few games we have given ourselves the opportunity to see out the game.
“On the pitch, we have played two 17-year-olds and a 15-year-old, this is really important for this football club, who we are and who we want to be. I am very proud – it was a tremendous win, and I look forward to the next round. ”
Shrewsbury boss Paul Hurst was disappointed with his side’s poor performance, noting that the team’s slow start set the tone for the game.
He said: “We started the game extremely poorly and that gave them a lift instantly. We got back in the game but certainly were not playing in the way I would have liked. And then we have a great chance straight away.
“The effort at the end to push, was too late so I am extremely disappointed, and this was not an enjoyable day in the slightest.
“Sometimes it feels like we are not understanding the situation. We took too much time getting the ball back in play when we were losing.
“At the end, we were pushing, but other than that we didn’t give Salford too many moments to get worried about.”
