David Artell praised Grimsby’s character after a thrilling last-gasp 3-2 win at Carlisle.
Goals from Sam Lavelle and Dominic Sadi either side of Luca Barrington’s effort put the hosts 2-1 up at the break.
But Lewis Cass levelled in the final 10 minutes before Harvey Rodgers’ dramatic stoppage-time header secured the visitors their first away win of the season.
Mariners’ stopper Jake Eastwood was stretchered as he collided with the goal during the first goal and was replaced by debutant Seb Auton.
“The players were magnificent second half,” said Artell.
“Did we deserve three points? Possibly. The manner and the character they showed from half-time.
“We’ve got 1-0 down and lost our keeper. We had an 18-year-old kid going on the pitch, we’ve come through some adversity there.
“We’ve got a pretty hefty injury crisis and I thought the lads showed unbelievable character.
“We’ve won it right at the death and we’re really pleased.
“A lot has been made about away form, back-to-back wins, but ultimately you’ve got to go and do it.
“It felt like it would be another one of those days when we go a goal down and you’re putting an 18-year-old lad, an apprentice on the pitch in goal, and I thought he was outstanding with the composure he showed.”
Artell provided an update on Eastwood’s condition.
He said: “He’s got a huge gash on his knee. We think he’s done that sliding into the metal at the back of the goal.
“We’re not sure if he’s ruptured his patella tendon. We’re hoping it’s just a massive gash.
“He’s in hospital and we’ll find out in the new few hours.”
Mike Williamson stressed his side need to remain focused right until the very end after conceding late.
The former Newcastle defender was less than impressed with the decision not to award his side a second-minute penalty after a coming together in the box.
“I think going in with a lead can affect you sometimes because you’re trying to hold onto something,” said the Carlisle boss.
“We’ve got to attack it and make sure we start the second half like we did the first.
“Our concentration levels lapsed. The boys gave it everything, but we just fell short there at the end.
“It comes down to concentration. The best players in the world have high levels throughout the whole game, they stay clinical and clean and that’s what we have to do.
“When fatigue sets in and you’re under that pressure it’s easy to try and relax and drop off a little bit. We made mistakes and it cost us.
“We need to defend with that tenacity and want to keep a clean sheet.
“I was frustrated with a few decisions.
“I thought the penalty shout in the first half was a clear penalty. It looked as though he completed lifted him. But you get that human error and we responded well.
“The fourth official said he had the same view as me which insinuates he thought it was a penalty, as did most people in the stadium.”
