Port Vale manager Darren Moore praised match-winner Ethan Chislett and the “huge team effort” from his side after they made it back-to-back wins in League Two with a 1-0 victory over Chesterfield.
Chislett’s third goal in as many league matches secured a first home win of the season for the Valiants, moving them up to eighth place in the table on 10 points.
The midfielder slotted home in the 11th minute after being played through by Lorent Tolaj’s lofted pass.
And although Moore reserved special praise for Chislett, he was also keen to hail the performance of the team as a whole.
“I thought the timing of his (Chislett’s) run, to come in off that side and present himself a clear run on goal, [was excellent],” he said.
“But then you’ve got to have the composure as well to finish, and he certainly showed that today.
“He’s been a really transformed individual in terms of his game and what he brings us.
“He brings real quality to us and he brings some intelligent to us, and credit to him.
“We’re all grateful that he got the all-important goal, but it was a huge team effort today.”
Having seen his side draw against Tranmere and lose against Doncaster in their opening two home league matches, Moore was delighted that the winless streak was not extended.
“I think the most important thing was just getting the three points at Vale Park in front of our home fans,” he added.
“We spoke about it at the start of the season and we’ve had three real difficult teams here, but we managed to get it done today.
“It was a closely-fought game. We took the chance that presented itself early in the first half.
“In the second half it was an evenly-fought contest and we came out on top.”
Promoted Chesterfield are two points behind Vale in 11th, having suffered a second defeat of the campaign.
Boss Paul Cook was extremely disappointed by the performance of his team as they failed to muster up any clear-cut chances or register a single shot on target.
“I didn’t like us today, I didn’t enjoy us at all,” he said.
“I never felt we got a really good foothole in the game at all.
“I think you’ve got to give Port Vale great credit.
“They had far more hunger and desire, they were robust and they wanted to win the game a bit more than us.
“That’s what seemed apparent and we never, ever imposed our style – what we’re trying to do – on them, which would have been width and more crosses and more balls in the box.
“We were second best today all over the pitch and as a manager, sometimes, you’ve got to compliment the opposition and say well done.
“It was Port Vale’s day and not ours.”
