Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho could be the key to helping his former employers offload Ben Chilwell this summer, despite the UK transfer window being shut. The British transfer window may have slammed shut on August 30, but that doesn't mean Chilwell's chances of leaving Stamford Bridge are over.
The left-back has been training separately from the first team at Cobham and has been given the green light to exit the club this summer. Despite rumours linking him with a move to Manchester United, no deal was struck before the deadline, leaving the ex-England international facing the possibility of warming the bench until January.
However, clubs in Turkey could throw him a lifeline. As reported by The Telegraph, while Chelsea would rather sell, they're open to loaning out Chilwell to a Turkish side, with their transfer window staying open until September 18.
This gives the defender a fortnight to secure a move if he wants to see any action before the January window. A potential reunion with Mourinho could be on the cards.
The Portuguese manager is currently at the helm of Fenerbahce, who are in the market for a new left-back following Ferdi Kadioglu's move to Brighton. TEAMTalk suggests that Chilwell is high on their wishlist, with fresh talks between the two clubs expected over the weekend.
The report suggests that the Turkish club are prepared to bide their time until the last days of the transfer window to secure the best possible loan deal, leveraging the fact that he is now unable to move elsewhere. Chilwell reportedly wants to remain in the Premier League, but understands that he will be benched if he stays.
"Chilly [Chilwell] has not been training for the last few days because he has been ill," Maresca said last month as he informed Chilwell that his best interests are to leave the club. "It's quite clear, I love the way he is but the problem is that he struggles with us a little bit to find his best position."
"This morning we had 22 players training, and if you ask all of them they will say they want to play against [Manchester] City on Sunday but that is impossible.
"When they train every day and do not get any minutes, it is not good for them or for me, [as] I need to make a decision. It is probably better to leave and get minutes [elsewhere]. The transfer window is open so we'll see what happens."
