Grant McCann is adamant his Doncaster side have goals in them after a frustrating display in the slender 1-0 home win over Morecambe.
Rovers came out on top with their only shot on target – Harry Clifton’s early goal which came in fortuitous circumstances after the midfielder charged down visiting goalkeeper Stuart Moore who dawdled in possession yards from his own goal.
Rovers tried their best to add to their tally but could not muster anything concrete in terms of chances.
After scoring over 90 goals en route to the Sky Bet League Two play-off semi-finals last term, McCann is confident that they will soon hit their stride.
“There’s lots of stuff we could have done better today, but the most important thing for us was to get the three points,” said McCann, whose team have now won three of their opening four matches of the new season.
“You saw the amount of opportunities we had. We just didn’t hit the target enough. We’ll score goals – I know that there’s goals in the team.
“I think we’ve scored eight goals in our four games so far, but I’m just disappointed there wasn’t more goals from us today. But I can’t grumble. We won and got a clean sheet today.
“Morecambe are a tough team even though they are near the bottom. They were unlucky, they have some experienced players and they are no mugs. I know they haven’t started well, but I’m pleased with three points today.
“We took too long on the ball today, but as I say I’m pleased with the win.”
As for the Shrimps, their toils in front of goal continue. This was their fourth loss from four fixtures to start the new campaign and they have yet to find the back of the net.
Despite that, manager Derek Adams believes they are making improvements and says that they shaded the second half in South Yorkshire.
Adams said: “I was delighted with the performance today because we obviously limited Doncaster to just one shot on target today.
“We had more shots on target than they did. We could have been better at times in the final third, of course we could.
“The major talking point was the mistake we made for the goal. The pass back into Stuart, he took too long in possession and they get the goal.
“You can’t afford to make that big an error in this league and that made it an uphill struggle for us.
“In the second half we were the better side and created chances, and were probably unfortunate not to come away with a draw in the end.
“But overall I’m really happy with the progress we’re making. We’ve brought in 18 players and we’re getting better week on week.”
