Birmingham manager Chris Davies believes his team were the better side “by some margin” as the Blues defeated Wycombe 3-2 at Adams Park.
After going 1-0 down through a Krystian Bielik own goal, strikes from Alfie May, Luke Harris and Willum Willumsson gave the visitors the victory, despite Sam Vokes’ 90th-minute consolation.
Davies said: “We played well and I thought we were the better team by some margin.
“I think 3-2 doesn’t reflect the game that clearly, but it is what it is.
“I thought we were good throughout generally.
“We did concede against the run play, and a frustrating goal from our point of view, as it was on the counterattack in the first half.
“But again, I think what’s pleasing for me is that we got ourselves back in the game and we continued to play.
“We continued to show discipline and that’s important for me.”
The turning point of the contest was the introduction of Ayumu Yokoyam.
The 21-year-old Japanese striker assisted Harris’ strike midway through the second period, before he had a role to play in Birmingham’s third.
Davies continued: “We were strong in the second half as well.
“We had obviously two more goals we could have scored a couple more as well.
“So overall, I’m pleased with the performance and result, and I think we did pretty well at set pieces too.”
Wycombe boss Matt Bloomfield also praised the Blues’ style of play, and believes the visitors will be promoted back to the Championship this season.
He compared the Blues’ style and business in the transfer market to Ipswich when they were promoted out of League One in 2022-23.
Bloomfield said: “It’s very disappointing to come out on the wrong end of two 3-2 defeats [following last week’s loss at Wrexham], but at the same time, I’m really proud of the effort and the application the boys are putting in.
“We’ve had some very good moments and we have to build them.
“Birmingham City are going to get promoted this season.
“Absolutely – they remind me of what Ipswich did a couple of years ago.
“They’ve gone and recruited an incredible young coach, they’re spending millions and millions of pounds on the backroom staff, on the playing staff, on everything and there’s no point spending all that money if you’re not going to do it right.
“They’re doing it right and properly.
“They’ve got some technically gifted players and they’re playing a brand of football that suits those boys.”
