El campeón inglés no tiene piedad de una débil escuadra germana a la que ha endosado un brutal 7-0 y que en ningún momento llegó soñar con la clasificación.
El Manchester City ya está en cuartos
Cuando se conocieron los distintos emparejamientos de los octavos de final, el que enfrentaba a Schalke 04 y Manchester City se presentaba como uno de los más desigualados de esta ronda de Liga de Campeones. Con un equipo netamente inferior al del pasado curso, la escuadra germana debía centrar sus esfuerzos en Bundesliga mientras el Manchester City sigue siendo uno de los principales conjuntos a seguir con vistas a levantar el título de campeón continental en Madrid a final de temporada.
El 2-3 logrado por la escuadra de Pep Guardiola en el encuentro de ida eliminaba cualquier tipo de duda acerca de la identidad del equipo que se clasificaría para los cuartos de final. Sin embargo, lo ocurrido hace apenas unas semanas tanto en el Santiago Bernabéu como en el Parque de los Príncipes ponía en alerta a los del Etihad, que hoy eran locales y grandes favoritos y no querían que se repitiese con Real Madrid y Paris Saint Germain.
Consciente del peligro de cualquier despiste, el Manchester City tardó cuarenta y cinco minutos en dejar solventada la faena. Pese a que no se mostró excesivamente fluido en ataque, el equipo de Pep Guardiola dejó plasmada su superioridad con un doblete de Sergio Agüero (el primero con un magistral lanzamiento de penalti ejecutado a lo Panenka) y otro tanto de un Leroy Sané que firmaba el 3-0 antes del descanso.

Tras la reanudación la tónica fue la misma. El Schalke 04 no ejercía la misma presión que en la ida y los locales se encontraban tremendamente cómodos en la circulación. Así, Leroy Sané veía como le anulaban el cuarto tanto del choque cuando apenas habían pasado unos minutos y el propio germano servía a Sterling para que este ampliara la ventaja después de que el VAR revisara la acción.
Ya en el setenta el portugués Bernardo Silva hacía más amplia la brecha y elevaba el parcial a un sonrojante 5-0 mientras Phil Foden (6-0) y Gabriel Jesús (7-0) provocaban el delirio entre sus aficionados. Con último tanto del brasileño el marcador global era de nada menos que 10-2, el cual deja bien a las claras la tremenda diferencia entre un conjunto como el alemán que lucha por escapar de la zona complicada de la Bundesliga y un Manchester City que quiere hacerse tanto con la Premier League como la Liga de Campeones. Y no cabe duda que los citizens darán mucho que hablar en la competición.
