Germany were embarrassed at the 2022 World Cup when the football giants failed to even make it past the group stage.
The Euro 2024 hosts are looking to make much more of an impact on home soil this summer and so far, so good - with a 5-1 hammering of Scotland and comfortable 2-0 win over Hungary ahead of their last game in Group A against Switzerland today (Sunday, June 23). But after their pitiful performance in Qatar two years ago, the nation's media lost their collective heads.
That's because German media outlets - clearly frustrated with the four-time World Cup winners failing to progress after a humbling defeat to Japan - bizarrely turned their fury to the WAGs of Die Mannschaft flops. And they even went as far as to question why their players' glamourous partners chose not to go out and party in Qatar.
In a strange twist after slamming their struggling team, who failed to reach the knockout stages for two tournaments in a row, it was the turn of the WAGs to take the flak. Strict drinking laws in the Middle East country were relaxed for the duration of the competition, with designated fan parks as well as the ability for some to drink in their own accommodation.
Having beaten Costa Rica but been knocked out thanks to Japan's win over Spain, German outlet Bild questioned: "What is actually wrong with our WAGs (wives and girlfriends)?" The tabloid went on to say that while partners from both England and Wales "drink Qatar half-dry", the German WAGs opted for less exciting breaks as their national side flopped.

English partners booked a huge mega yacht for a more than comfortable stay in the middle east. Meanwhile Wales' WAGs were pictured downing shots and dancing to music before their own group stage exits.
That's not to say the Germany's WAGs didn't show their support, with Arsenal star Kai Havertz's beautiful partner Sophia Weber cheering on her man in Qatar, and former Manchester City ace Ilkay Gundogan's wife Sara going above and beyond, by making the trip even though she was pregnant.
Germany's WAGs haven't been afraid of enjoying a drink or two in the past when in their homeland - certainly not Mario Gotze's glamorous wife Ann-Kathrin Brommel, who was out in Qatar, or Christina Ginter, wife of German centre-back Matthias. Sadly neither of their men are part of Germany's Euros squad.

The Welsh WAGs looked to make the most of their time in Qatar before their premature exit from the tournament, with Chris Mepham's fiancee Jodie Francis among those doing shots. Another clip from their accommodation showed a cartwheel gone wrong with it ending with a crash into a table.
Meanwhile, the England camp were joined by the likes of Sasha Attwood, Jack Grealish's partner, as well as Jordan Pickford's wife Megan Davidson among others.
