Manchester United defender Harry Maguire and Manchester City winger Jack Grealish have both reportedly been cut from England's final Euro 2024 squad.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Maguire confirmed on Instagram that he has not been selected, while The Athletic reports that Grealish has not made Gareth Southgate's final 26-player squad ahead of this summer's European Championship. The report adds that Tottenham's James Maddison, Liverpool duo Jarell Quansah and Curtis Jones, and Burnley's James Trafford, all of whom made the initial 33-man rostra, are also 'expected' to miss out. The Telegraph also reports that Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite is set to be axed.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Grealish has struggled for game time this season, scoring just three times and bagging one assist in 20 Premier League games for City. Maguire, on the other hand, has struggled with various injuries - the most recent of which caused him to miss the end of the season with a muscle issue - but his form has, on the whole, been solid enough.
DID YOU KNOW?
With Maguire out, that leaves England boss Southgate with centre-back options of Brighton's Lewis Dunk, Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi, Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa, City's John Stones, and Liverpool's Joe Gomez.
WHAT NEXT?
Three Lions boss Southgate has until 11pm on Friday evening to confirm his 26-man squad for the European Championship. Before then, England face Iceland earlier that evening in their final warm-up match before the tournament begins in Germany.
