Real Madrid president Florentino Perez blocked coach Carlo Ancelotti's request to sign Harry Kane from Tottenham last summer, a report claims.
WHAT HAPPENED?
The Italian coach had named Kane as his number one transfer target last summer - ahead of his international team-mate Jude Bellingham - after seeing Karim Benzema leave for Al-Ittihad, according to Relevo, but Perez refused to sanction the move. Perez had his heart set on signing Kylian Mbappe instead of the Englishman and was willing to let Madrid play without a real number nine before signing the French forward on a free transfer in the coming summer.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Kane ended up joining German giants Bayern Munich from Spurs and has enjoyed an awesome debut season, despite his team's underwhelming performances domestically. Kane has scored 42 goals in as many games in all competitions, helping Thomas Tuchel's team to the Champions League semi-finals, where they will come up against Madrid.
DID YOU KNOW?
Perez appears set to get his way as Madrid are expected to sign Mbappe in the next transfer window. The France star has reportedly told Paris Saint-Germain that he will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season, though no deal with Madrid has been announced so far.
WHAT NEXT FOR REAL MADRID?
Ancelotti's Madrid will travel to Germany to face Kane's Bayern in the first leg of the semi-finals of the Champions League on Tuesday before the return fixture in Spain the following Wednesday. The winners of the tie will go on to face either Mbappe's PSG or Borussia Dortmund in the final.
