Manchester United are reportedly set to target three attacking players in the summer as their hopes of signing Napoli striker Victor Osimhen fade. Although Erik ten Hag is set to be boosted by new investment following the minority takeover of Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the club are unlikely to try and trigger the £103million release clause for the Nigerian amid Financial Fair Play restrictions and the need to also strengthen the squad elsewhere.
Despite £72million man Rasmus Hojlund finding form after a difficult start to life in England, Anthony Martial is expected to leave in the summer while Marcus Rashford continues to appear out-of-sorts. And Ten Hag is perceived to be lacking back-up firepower if he is to fulfil Ratcliffe’s ambitions to get United challenging for the Premier League title again.
According to GiveMeSport, the Red Devils are weighing up a move for Brighton’s Evan Ferguson. The 19-year-old Irish international has just 12 Premier League goals to his name, but has still been widely touted as a future star and is unlikely to come cheap given last year he signed a new six-year deal that runs until 2029.
And the player has been given a glowing endorsement from Alan Shearer, the Premier League’s record goalscorer. The BBC pundit labelled the teenager “the real deal”, adding: “Left foot, right foot, headers, pace, aggression, intuition; there is no obvious weakness to his game.”
While Ferguson, who also has three goals in 11 games for Ireland, won’t command a three-figure fee, given his potential Brighton will inevitably try and ramp up the price for their top-flight rivals. It could mean Ratcliffe agrees to a deal that surpasses the fee paid for Hojlund, representing a risk given United’s much-maligned transfer policy in the past decade.
United will know that they won’t be the only potential buyer when it comes to Ferguson though, and are also said to be targeting RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko. After three years at Leipzig’s sister club RB Salzburg, the 20-year-old Slovenian has scored 11 club goals in Germany this season, and in all likelihood would provide a far more economical option than Osimhen or Ferguson given he’s rated at under £50million.
The Red Devils are also reportedly tracking Bologna's Joshua Zirkzee, who has been linked with AC Milan. The Dutch star spent time at Bayern Munich as a youngster and now 22, and having also scored 11 times for his team in the 2023/24 campaign, would represent a long-term investment.
