Gareth Southgate has closed the door on Mason Greenwood making his England return in the upcoming Euros.
Greenwood, 22, is currently on loan at Getafe from Manchester United. He has enjoyed his spell in Spain this season, having joined the club from Old Trafford in the summer.
The forward is likely to leave boyhood club United permanently this summer, however. And despite his decent form on the pitch, the England manager has made it very clear he is not thinking about including Greenwood at Euro 2024 this summer.
He said: "Well for me I don't think it's something for pre-Euros. I think allowing him to get his career going again abroad appears to have been a good move but I have to say I have not tracked it closely. I think at this moment in time it would be a big distraction for the team and let's see where that leads next season."
Despite suggesting that Greenwood might play for the Three Lions again, Southgate said he would need to carry out his own personal investigation before calling up the youngster. He added: "I would need to know more details about the whole thing before it was an option."
Meanwhile, Jamaica could yet offer Greenwood a chance to play for them through his dad, Andrew. Greenwood has only played once for England's senior team in a match which they won 1-0 against Iceland in September 2020.
But that special moment was tarnished by controversy when Greenwood and Phil Foden were sent home from Iceland early because they did not follow strict quarantine rules at their hotel, reports the Mirror.
Since moving to Getafe, Greenwood has been in stellar form, scoring eight goals and setting up five more. The Madrid outfit are keen to keep him once this season ends, though bigger teams, like Atletico Madrid, are also interested in him.
Speaking in February, United's new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe hinted that Greenwood could return to Old Trafford this summer. Ratcliffe stated: "It's a fresh decision. I can talk about the principle. I am not going to talk about Mason. I am familiar with it.
"The principle is the important one. We will have other issues going forward. You are dealing with young people who have not always been brought up in the best circumstances, who have a lot of money and they don't always have the guidance they should have.
"What we need to do when we have issues like that is understand real effects, not the hype. Then we need to make a fair decision in the light of the club's values. That's what we need to do and that's how we will deal with it."
