Mason Greenwood reportedly has no real desire to play for Manchester United again after feeling a lack of support from the club during his highly-publicised case.
Greenwood left Old Trafford last summer, joining La Liga outfit Getafe on a season-long loan deal after United announced he would not return to the squad following the outcome of their internal investigation into the 22-year-old. He was previously suspended over allegations relating to a woman when images and videos were posted on social media. The club's investigation came after a decision in February by the UK's Crown Prosecution Service to discontinue its case against him for attempted rape, assault, and coercive control due to key witnesses withdrawing their cooperation from the investigation. The player denied all the alleged offences.
Since then, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has completed his minority investment at the club and remained coy regarding Greenwood's future amid murmurs he could be reintegrated ahead of next season. "It's quite clear we have to make a decision," he said last week. "The process will be to understand the facts, not the hype, and then try to come to a fair decision based on values."
But according to The Athletic, Greenwood has a preference over his own future, with sources close to him who have an understanding of Greenwood's thinking saying that even if United were to facilitate his return to the squad, he would be reluctant to accept. It's claimed that Greenwood feels the club should've supported him better over his case and as a result he doesn't hold any great desire to play for United again.
It's also said that he recognises the level of scrutiny and greater pressure he would receive returning to United or to an English club, and therefore him staying in La Liga beyond this summer is more appealing. Greenwood returned home to Manchester over Christmas but is said to be enjoying life in Madrid with his partner and their baby.
Greenwood has remained largely out of the spotlight in Spain, with the flashpoint with Jude Bellingham, where the Real Madrid star allegedly called him a 'rapist', the only major concern following his move, nothing like the attention he would assumingly receive in England.
Getafe's president Angel Torres previously insisted that Greenwood wants to remain at the club next season but there is also keen interest from Barcelona in his signature. United could now be about to profit from Greenwood's form in Spain where he has scored seven times and registered five assists.
