Jurgen Klopp has explained that his fading motivation was behind his decision to step down as Liverpool manager at the end of the season.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Klopp announced last week that he will end his time in charge of the Reds this summer after almost nine years in charge. The infinitely-popular German manager's decision came as a shock to the Liverpool players and fans but he has explained why he feels he must leave the club.
WHAT KLOPP SAID
Klopp said in an interview with Rio Ferdinand on TNT Sports: "It's not that I want to leave, it's more that I have to. If I cannot do it like that, if I cannot be the guy there who pushes the team to the Champions League and stuff like this, why should I do the job? I never like that when you're still in a job and like 'when is training? [Yawn]'. I cannot do that. I'm not in that moment. I'm absolutely fine, that's how it should be... I don't want to be a passenger. The job is too important, the job is too important. That's why I decided."
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Klopp has guided the Anfield team to success in the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League, among other trophies. His final months in charge of the Merseysiders are to be the subject of a documentary as the ex-Borussia Dortmund boss hopes to lead his side to another Premier League title as well as success in the Europa League.
WHAT NEXT FOR KLOPP?
The 56-year-old will see out the rest of the season with Liverpool. His team are currently top of the Premier League and two points ahead of nearest rivals Arsenal, though the Reds have a game in hand. Klopp's team are in action again on Wednesday as they host Chelsea. What the future holds for him beyond the send of the season remains to be seen.
