United didn't expect to be in the market for a left back before the summer transfer deadline but Erik ten Hag and co had to act.
Tyrell Malacia suffered a problem in pre-season and still hasn't returned whilst Luke Shaw picked up an injury in August.
That meant United suddenly had to go into the market again, this time striking a loan deal for Tottenham Hotspur's Sergio Reguilon.
United are understood to have agreed a January exit clause, paving the way for Reguilon to potentially leave Old Trafford.
Borussia Dortmund make move for Sergio Reguilon
United are yet to decide whether to send Reguilon back to Tottenham but he is already attracting rival interest.
Sky Germany report that Borussia Dortmund have now made enquiries into signing Reguilon.
The Bundesliga side have blown hot and cold this season and Edin Terzic wants new signings.
A left back appears to be a priority and Dortmund are asking about a deal for Reguilon if he does end up heading back to Spurs.
Much will depend on United's stance here but Reguilon seemingly won't be short of suitors if Ten Hag sends him packing.
United may need to keep Reguilon
Reguilon has started four Premier League games for United and another two in the Champions League,
The 27-year-old hasn't been spectacular by any means but he has contributed when given a chance.
Ten Hag was pretty non-committal on Reguilon's future last week and indicated that a decision would be made soon, but we think he may need to keep the Spaniard.
United confirmed earlier this month that Malacia won't be back until early 2024 having 'suffered a setback'.
The Dutchman can't be expected to make an immediate impact upon his return having not made a single appearance this term.
Reguilon may well need to stick around as cover for Shaw, even if we can't see him having a long-term future at United.
