El ex jugador de Arsenal y Barcelona dirigirá al combinado galo en los Juegos Olímpicos de París
Thierry Henry, leyenda del fútbol francés ex del Arsenal y del Barcelona, fue nombrado seleccionador de su país en la categoría Sub-21, con la que competirá, entre otros torneos, en los Juegos Olímpicos de París de 2024, en los que podría dirigir a Kylian Mbappé.
El comité ejecutivo de la Federación Francesa de Fútbol (FFF) escogió prácticamente por unanimidad a Henry por delante de Sabri Lamouchi (ex del Cardiff City, Nottingham Forest y Rennes), desveló la prensa deportiva francesa antes del anuncio oficial.
Henry sustituirá a Sylvain Ripoll, cesado en julio por la eliminación precoz en el sub-21 europeo. Actualmente con 46 años, Henry ha sido comentarista televisivo durante los últimos meses. En 2021 y 2022 fue el segundo del español Roberto Martínez en la selección belga.
El célebre delantero, que fue campeón del mundo con Francia en 1998, también entrenó al Montreal Impact (de la MSL estadounidense) y al Mónaco, el club de más rango al que dirigió en la 2018-2019 con resultados discretos.
Con los sub-21, una categoría en la que Francia rebosa talento, tendrá como gran desafío los JJOO de París 2024, en los que Kylian Mbappé ha comunicado su deseo participar dentro del cupo de mayores de 23 años al que tiene derecho cada selección.
Antes de su faceta como entrenador y comentarista, Henry tuvo una gran carrera como futbolista. Considerado uno de los mejores delanteros del mundo en la década de 2000, "Titi" se formó en el Mónaco, como Mbappé; jugó brevemente en la Juventus de Turín; y en 1999 fichó por el Arsenal de Arsène Wenger, con el que había coincidido en el Mónaco.
Se convirtió en una leyenda del Arsenal inglés, con el que venció dos Ligas en sus ocho temporadas, y, ya en el final de su carrera al más alto nivel, tuvo un notable paso por el Barcelona, con el que logró por fin la Liga de Campeones en 2009. Colgó las botas en 2014 en el New York Red Bulls.
Con la selección de Francia fue, desde 2009, su mejor artillero histórico (51 tantos en 123 encuentros) hasta que Olivier Giroud lo superó en el mundial de Catar de 2022. Henry ganó el Mundial de 1998, la Eurocopa de 2000 y fue subcampeón del mundial en 2006
