Solo un jugador de este Manchester City que buscará ante el Inter este sábado su primera Champions ha ganado ya este trofeo y, curiosamente, lo hizo con la camiseta de uno de los grandes rivales de los 'citizens', el Liverpool. Para mayor inri, nada menos que en el estadio Atatürk de Estambul, el escenario de la final de mañana.
Se trata de Scott Carson, de 37 años, actual tercer portero del Manchester City y una persona muy apreciada en su vestuario. El veterano guardameta militó en el Liverpool entre 2005 y 2008 y levantó la Champions con los 'reds' en la final del llamado 'milagro de Estambul', la histórica remontada del equipo de Anfield contra el Milan el 25 de mayo de 2005 (2-3 por penaltis después de un 3-3). Al descanso, el Milan ganaba por 3-0.
Carson era entonces portero suplente del Liverpool (con Jerzy Dudek de cancerbero titular y héroe en aquella legendaria final) y en el banquillo el hoy 'citizen' vivió aquel inolvidable partido, uno de los más memorables, sino el que más, de la historia de las finales de la Champions.
Carson llegó al City en el verano de 2019, cedido por el Derby County, y pasó a pertenecer en propiedad al club del Etihad en 2021. A sus 37 años, el 26 de mayo el meta inglés renovó hasta 2024.
Ningún otro jugador del Manchester City ha logrado ganar la Champions y en la actual plantilla hay 13 supervivientes de la final perdida en 2020-21 contra el Chelsea, entre ellos Ilkay Gündogan, Rodri, Kevin de Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, Ederson y John Stones.
Gündogan ha perdido dos finales de Champions: con el City la de 2020-21 y con el Borussia Dortmund ante el Bayern la de 2012-13.
