El Villarreal se encuentra a solo dos pasos de alcanzar la primera final de su historia de la Champions, que se disputará el próximo 28 de mayo en el Stade de France de París. Los de Unai Emery quieren vivir otra gran noche en el mítico Anfield ante el temible Liverpool en la ida de unas semifinales que los ‘reds’ disputan por tercera vez en las últimas cinco temporadas. La única aparición del equipo ‘groguet’ en esta ronda fue hace 16 años y terminó con un doloroso KO precisamente ante otro rival inglés, el Arsenal.
El conjunto de Emery, sin embargo, visitará sin complejos a un gigante que está protagonizando un espectacular duelo con el Manchester City por el título de la Premier. El Villarreal, vigente campeón de la Europa League, sueña con igualar la asombrosa gesta del Porto de José Mourinho, que ganó la Champions en la 2003-04 tras conquistar un año antes la Copa de la UEFA.
El Liverpool pasa por un momento muy dulce, pero en esta edición de la Champions, el Villarreal ya ha dejado en la cuneta a dos campeones continentales de renombre: en octavos de final superó a la Juventus con un espectacular 0-3 en Turín, tras el 1-1 de la ida en La Cerámica, y en cuartos hizo lo propio con el Bayern, flamante campeón de la Bundesliga 2021-22, después de ganarle en La Cerámica (1-0) y rematarle en Múnich (1-1). Estas eliminatorias han propiciado que el Villarreal llegue a esta semifinal con muy buenas sensaciones y en uno de los mejores momentos de la temporada ya que en LaLiga se ha vuelto a meter en la lucha por las plazas europeas.
Mientras, Unai Emery adelantó ayer que Gerard Moreno seguramente no llegará a tiempo para el partido de hoy por sus dolencias físicas, ni tampoco Yeremy Pino, del que dijo que sufre una elongación que venía arrastrando días atrás y que se resintió en el último entrenamiento, aunque, por contra, señaló que Coquelin estará disponible.
Por lo que respecta al Liverpool, destacar que la suerte de las lesiones, a diferencia de la pasada campaña, ha sonreído a Jürgen Klopp, que podrá contar con todos sus futbolistas salvo el brasileño Firmino, aquejado de problemas físicos. El técnico alemán, que dispone de una de las plantillas más competitivas del planeta, contará con un ataque de lujo formado por Luis Díaz (llegado en el mercado de invierno procedente del Porto), Mohamed Salah y Sadio Mané. Entre los tres suman 69 goles este temporada: 30 el egipcio, 20 el colombiano y 19 el senegalés.
Los únicos enfrentamientos anteriores entre Villarreal y Liverpool se produjeron en la semifinal de la Europa League 2015-16, en la que Adrián López marcó en el 92’ el único gol de la ida en España y dio la victoria al equipo ‘groguet’, dirigido entonces por Marcelino García Toral. Sin embargo, el Liverpool de Klopp dio la vuelta a la eliminatoria con un 3-0 en Anfield, con un tempranero autogol de Bruno Soriano (7’), al que se sumaron en la segunda parte los tantos de Daniel Sturridge (63’) y Adam Lallana (81’). Una edición en la que los ‘reds cayeron en la final ante el Sevilla (1-3) que entrenaba precisamente Unai Emery, el hoy técnico del Villarreal.
